Being a physician I have always been fascinated with traditional healing rituals. While in Ha Giang I was lucky enough to encounter this Hmong shaman performing a spirit negotiation ceremony in a family home. The real life patient is the young woman wearing a hooded jacket seated against the wall to his left who had just been hospitalized with pneumonia. Here the shaman is wearing a ceremonial cloth mask and grasping a musical instrument somewhat similar to a tambourine. Holding the instrument he shakes and jerks his arms and legs up and down while uttering incantations and enters into a trance like state. The idea is that his soul leaves the body and journeys into the spirit world to communicate with spirits or ancestors, where he bargains for the patient's health and well-being.
Augustine is an octogenarian and shaman, originally from New Mexico.

This is my piece for Kiara's contest :)! This is the photo of hers that I recreated in my own way. I took her concept of going through a difficult time and having to fight your way through it. Even though there are people that may want to help you, it's up to you in the end. All you can do is fight - even if the pain is unbearable.

The name for a high priestess. A Shaman who keeps the songs and rituals in her scepter and maintains the community’s relationship with the spirits.
When it's quiet, music can be heard from around the scepter.

Photographed at the ultra remote Chinese border in the Altai Mountains beyond the military checkpoints. We were the first outsiders ever to enter this valley.

This is Galba. She was the last of the Tuvan Shaman in Mongolia.
She took us here, to her birthplace high in Mongolia's Altai Mountains to perform a ritual at her most sacred place, and sacred tree.
Galba told us we were the first foreigners ever to visit this place on the border, with the mountains of China in the background.
Galba passed away less than a week after I took this photograph of her. She was the only remaining Tuvan Shaman in Mongolia, and my feature on her was published world-wide by Lonely Planet in Autumn 2014.
