Bunhill Row Burial Ground

Almost forgot about this photo from Calgary, AB. An unfinished apartment project that has been sitting for years while Alberta continues to feel the pressure of its financial downturn. These are elevator shafts and made an interesting image against the blue sky. Rather like building blocks or life size lego.

The view of the sky from the bottom of a sewage pumping shaft.

A rain shaft approaches in Saint Charles County, MO, sometime in 2015 or 2016. I don’t recall if this was severe or not. It’s another shot my favorite female offspring was recently able to find and send to me, but there is no original, so please pardon the less than stellar resolution.

Running parallel to the QE2 bridge are the two original tunnels under the Thames. It used to be that one carried northbound traffic and the other southbound. The bridge now carries all the southbound traffic so both tunnels carry those heading up from Kent to Essex. In a situation where the bridge has to close, such as very bad weather, the tunnels revert back to one in each direction. The funnels opposite are ventilation shafts for the tunnels.

Bright shafts descend—

clouds part with quiet blessing

over restless waves.

A hush between storm and peace.

A shaft of late day light adds depth to the layers of granite peaks in Huangshan National Park (Yellow Mountains), a UNESCO World Heritage SIte. Its soaring granite cliffs and picturesque pine trees have had a significant influence in Chinese arts and literature, especially Chinese ink painting. Many of the peaks and old Huangshan pine trees have names.

Shot in Genova, Italy.

On the lonely hilltop of Colborne at the western end of Edale sits this Victorian-built structure. It marks the top of an air shaft for Cowburn Tunnel on the Hope Valley railway line. The tunnel is 867 feet below the structure making it one of the deepest railway tunnels in England.

This really started as a joke between my friend, Mazi and myself. The idea kept swirling in my head then I just decided to bite the bullet and do my rendition or homage to Shaft or... Shaqt 😉

I didn't discover this long drive shaft on all my previous trips to Dinorwic. It runs the whole length of the cutting shed on Australia level. I had to stick myself through a small (compared to me) hole in the wall through which the drive belt would have passed, to be able to see down its length. But it vanishes into the fog.

Sorry if I'm boring anyone with the pics from this shoot ;o)
