I was disappointed to have clipped the tail on this beautiful bird so decided to crop it for a singing Redstart portrait.

Female or immature male. Hurricane Dorian seems to have been responsible for a major fallout of fall migrant in NJ, as my yard was suddenly swarming with birds. This was taken from my study window.

You'd hardly think it, but it is. It's either a female or an immature male. Young males have the same coloration as the female until their second fall. So, young male or female ... I really don't know for sure, but I would be inclined to say young male.

Looks like a young male growing into breeding plumage.

Setopha garuticilla

Young male American Redstarts have gray-and-yellow plumage, like females, until their second fall. Yearling males sing vigorously in the attempt to hold territories and attract mates. Some succeed, but most do not breed successfully until the following year when they develop black-and-orange breeding plumage.

A couple more American Redstart photos. Different poses but you will notice that the blue coloration is still there in the head area.

Snapped this tiny bird (warbler?) today near the Crystal Beach Wastewater Pumping Station in Nepean (Ottawa), Ontario, Canada.

Sadly, as much as I love all creatures big and small, and especially the winged ones, I have no idea as to what this beautiful bird is known as. Yet such a delight for it to rest for just a tad bit so that I was able to photograph it.

Thanks to fellow Flickr member and photographer in my neck of the woods, Roger Daigle, who is big time into birding, he confirmed that this is an American Redstart. Kudos Roger!

Not sure if this was a breeding display for the female that was in the yard or an aggression display to keep other birds out of his bath.

Either way it is a beautiful bird.

The male American Redstart sometimes has two mates at the same time. While many other polygamous bird species involve two females nesting in the same territory, the redstart holds two separate territories that can be separated by a quarter-mile. The male begins attracting a second female after the first has completed her clutch and is incubating the eggs.

I had planned to heat East into Eastern Manitoba to catch the spring migration of warblers and others. However the pandemic closed down the Canadian provinces and then in BC travel between Health districts. BUT travel between Northern BC and the Interior Health District was permitted. So we headed up to Fort St. John as it is on the Eastern side of the Rockies and catches the edge of the migration. I managed five lifers, 3 warblers, a gull and a flycatcher. This is my fifth warbler.

This young lady was found in Moberly Lake Provincial Park. She breeds across Canada and winters in Central and Northern South America.

The oldest American Redstart was at least 10 years and one month old, when he was recaptured and rereleased during a banding operation in Ontario.

Probably the most common warbler of our trip to Michigan was the American Redstart, and the majority of those that we encountered had plumage like this one that I assume is a female. They seemed to pop up pretty much everywhere we went.
