American redstart, Rondeau Provincial Park, June 30, 2022.

For most of June we have yellow warblers but no others.

This redstart popped in late in the day and was a welcome surprise.

Setophaga ruticilla.

American Redstarts are common spring and fall migrants in the East. It is a later spring migrant (arriving in May in much of the U.S. and Canada) and a mid-season fall migrant (September-early October).

While not as colorful as the male, this female American Redstart is a beautiful warbler. In this photo I managed to get a frame full of this female during my visit to Magee Marsh during the Spring warbler migration back in 2016.

* Candelita, American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) (Mc)

The American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) is a New World warbler. It is unrelated to the Old World redstarts. It derives its name from the male's red tail, start being an old word for tail.

The breeding males are unmistakable, jet black above apart from large orange-red patches on their wings and tails. Their breast sides are also orange, with the rest of their underparts colored white. In their other plumages, American redstarts display green in their upperparts, along with black central tails and grey heads. The orange patches of the breeding males are replaced by yellow in the plumages of the females and young birds.

Macho Juvenil

En proceso de cambio de color del plumaje

At the reservoir, described yesterday, this female American Redstart landed close to us several times. If a male was present, we didn't see him. I'm always happy to see one - these little warblers pass through my backyard some years during spring and fall migration. But they breed elsewhere (as far north as southern Yukon and Northwest Territories). Not enough trees or water for them in my area. This location is where their breeding territory resumes - amid countless small lakes and sloughs and water-filled "prairie potholes", gouged by retreating glaciers 10,000 years ago, provide the habitat they require.

We encountered this American Redstart along the Au Sable River in Michigan. Though not as showy as an adult male, that fanned tail is pretty tough to resist.

Celebrating Fall, continued: an American Redstart in fall migration perches on a tree branch above my garden fence. I only see this species here in September. Like the other warblers, they always brighten my day.

This American Redstart male in bright breeding plumage was seen on the Bur Oak trail in Birds Hill Provincial Park near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

This American redstart appeared at the bath late afternoon today. I think this same warbler has been around our yard for the past three or four days.

On October 8, two redstarts came to the bath at the same time!
