Prise sur la vieille cloture de bois à l'entrée de l'allée. L'oiseau était très près et avait les ailes un peu ouvertes. Je me demande ce que ce comportement veux bien dire pour lui...

I was pretty jazzed to capture a little Halloween color yesterday at Quintana Neotropical Bird Sanctuary with this little American Redstart that was flitting around the trees near the front water feature. They sure don’t sit still for long!

The American Redstart is a unique warbler. The male is black with orange patches on each wing, on the sides of its breast, and at the base of its tail on either side. The male's throat is black, but its breast and belly are white. The female is gray where the male is black, and yellow where the male is orange. The female also has a white eye-ring. Juveniles and first-year males look like females, although first-year males generally have some black on the upper breast or head. The American Redstart has a relatively short, wide bill.

One of the many warbler species that pass through Rondeau during migration.

American Redstarts flash the bright patches in its tail and wings. This seems to startle insect prey and give the birds an opportunity to catch them.

Backyard bird sightings, continued... this American Redstart was a welcome visitor during fall migration last year. I thought it was a female, but immature males look similar, so who knows... not that it matters to me. Species identification is hard enough without getting into gender issues.

Considering that I used a 1.4x teleconverter on my 500mm and also pushed it through ON1 Resize (minor upscaling just to tighten the crop), the result is surprisingly sharp. Can't beat modern optics.

I love working with soft light. Not as much drama, but no deep black shadows to obscure detail. It depends on subject matter, of course: landscape would be very difficult on a day like this. The light is always good for something; it's our job to figure out what that may be. Little birds up close in soft light would rank very high on my list of favourite shooting situations.

The American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) is a New World warbler. It is unrelated to the Old World redstarts. It derives its name from the male's red tail, start being an old word for tail.

The breeding males are unmistakable, jet black above apart from large orange-red patches on their wings and tails. Their breast sides are also orange, with the rest of their underparts colored white. In their other plumages, American redstarts display green in their upperparts, along with black central tails and grey heads. The orange patches of the breeding males are replaced by yellow in the plumages of the females and young birds.

A male busily singing in a copse of oaks, letting other males know this is his turf. American redstarts arrive from their wintering grounds (Central and South America) fairly late compared to other warblers, but head south around the same time in the fall as other warblers.
