This is a closer look at the Imperial Mobile HQ, a steampunk recreation of the Ultra Agents set 70165. Created for the Big Build entry for the LEGO Steampunk group's competition.
Upper Deck:
The main deck is separated into two parts - the office and workshop/lab. Since this is an HQ, I figured the agents should be able to do everything here. In the office, there's a bookcase filled with reference books and artifacts from previous missions, a billboard pinned with all relevant information to the latest mission, a desk to write reports on (those pesky reports), and a wall full of weapons and even more weapons in a chest. The stove in the middle is absolutely necessary for brewing tea. Then there's the shared workshop and lab for Agent O'Malley to invent and fix contraptions, and for Professor Whirlygull to conduct her research on the go.
Lower Deck:
On the lower deck, the Steam Bike rests securely on its platform, and the temporary prison as well. Both prison and bike holds up when the wall is folded to close the container in the HQ's mobile mode.
Truck:
The original truck is so much shorter, but it's only because I placed a giant boiler behind it. Come on, the thing needs a ridiculous amount of power to pull all those agents' books, stove and furniture, right? :P
Considering that the original set had a drone stuck to the back of the truck, it's here as well, but as a gyro-copter for the agents to wear in case they need an aerial advantage.

Here is a Breviary of footnotes regarding the photograph. They include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. The figures as holograms
Like Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase No.2.", I wanted to create a ‘moving picture.’ To photograph a moment is to freeze it in time. In this photograph, I used a simple in-camera setting, multiple-exposure, to create an illusion of movement, thereby providing an opportunity for the figures to transcend a multi-dimensional space. Not a single figure is in the same spot at a given moment in time. Each is a hologram, an evocation of shades upon an illusory space. To be or not to be is no longer the question. It is the solution.
2. The figures ascending a sacred space
In his review article for the New York Times, Nicolai Ouroussoff likened the entry hall of the Modern Wing as a contemporary version of a cathedral because of its long and towering space, illuminated with white light. Of the main staircase to the galleries, he said that some may feel as if they're ascending to a 'sacred space.' The whole series was shot in a span of half an hour. And while shooting, I saw the window curtains raised and lowered a few times. The light, as it filtered through the white cantilevered blades, competed for my attention. My camera was focused on the movement, but the flickering light demanded to be on the center stage. Initially, I had wanted to title the series "The Light Cathedral."
3. The figures as avenging angels
Lee Alexander McQueen died on February 11th. When I shot this series on February 27th, I was still in a state of shock. His tweets leading up to his suicide haunted me. The Autumn/Winter 2010 shows had just started in NYC. Next up was London, then Milan and finally, Paris where his show was going to be held. Tweet by tweet, he had begun dropping hints as to what his new collection was going to look like. Previously, his S/S “Lady Gaga Armadillo" collection caused a tsunami of accolades. So, expectations were high. The inspirations for his new designs, he described, were "hell's angels and prolific demons”, “avenging (warrior) angels", "Dante" (see Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso), "Bosch", (Marquis) de Sade, “Memling”, etc. In my view, the figures in my photographs are the avenging angels who have travelled through nine circles of hell in order to escort him to his next life.
4. The figures made buoyant by two opposing forces: Gravitas and Entropy
The rendering of the photographs echoes the style of Abstract Expressionism movement, but its spirit resides in the Roman/Greek Classical tradition, fiercely and ferociously (See Ara Pacis Augustae; trans. Altar of Augustan Peace). Two opposing forces are at work in this tableau: Entropy uplifts but Gravitas, seems to hold and weigh down each figure, keeping them on track for their appointed destination.
5. The figures conceived by Mr. Eggleston
When I took these photographs, I was one of the lucky few queuing up William Eggleston's (b. 1939) autograph in the main hall of the Modern Wing/Art Institute. An exhibition of his work called "Democratic Camera" was underway. He had actually arrived on time, but before he could sit down, he asked one of his assistants to bum off a cigarette from one the fans. The idea to take these photos came about as I was waiting for him to come back to the main hall. I was on the first floor, with the main staircase hovering over me. The first shots, done as single exposures, weren’t interesting. And then I began to experiment and play with light and movement. This is how “Waiting for Mr. Eggleston/Figures Ascending and Descending a Staircase” was born.

The complex surface treatments Queen Anne style houses are known for are on full display here. Stained glass windows were also part of this design vocabulary and evident here. Smaller version here of a towered Queen Anne but as ornamental as far larger versions.

I often shoot at home in my loft, in fact many of the model photos throughout my stream have been shot here. Definitely anything on the red couch (seen in the right side photo here) and many on seamless paper.
For my portrait, here's what I used:
Props and lighting
+ 4.5' black seamless paper for the background suspended about 15' and rolled to the floor
+ for lighting the background I used Calumet 750r with a grid reflector (but no grid) and barn doors; you can see the barn doors peeking out from behind my right elbow on the left side photo
+ the main light was a Calumet Travelite 750r with beauty dish placed directly over the camera as you can see in the right side photo.
+ for some of the photos, I held a silver reflector to bounce fill up under my chin
+ behind the beauty dish and camera, I propped up a mirror so I could position myself properly in the 'sweet spot' of the light and also check the shadows
Camera set up
+ Canon 7D with 24-70mm f/2.8L on tripod
+ PocketWizard Plus IIs for wireless strobe triggering
+ knock-off brand remote radio shutter trigger (works better than the infrared remote and can be better concealed)
+ 15" MacBook Pro running Aperture 3 and connected to a 23" Apple Cinema Display
+ shooting in tethered mode, each time I would make an exposure, Aperture would suck the RAW file off the 7D and then display it on the 23" screen.
This gave instant feedback about my position and the light so I could make adjustments quickly.
