The first two options often work for computers directly connected to the Internet. If LAN is used, the block could be coming from the system administrator. This can be overridden by proxy servers. Proxies can come in the form of software or websites. This allows access to websites by masking the user’s IP address. The IP address is an address given to systems connected to the Internet. The LAN will not be able to recognize that the user is browsing a blocked website because it detects the IP address of the private proxy and not the user.
Comcast cable 8m/768k, from bottom to top:
- The NAS (Debian, AMD 1500, 512mb, 890GB, rackmount case)
- The Monowall (monowall, p3/700, 256mb, 3 NICS, salvaged HP desktop)
- The Win2k "server" (Win2k, p4/1ghz, 256mb, 40gig, Toshiba laptop with busted screen, runs mail server + random windows apps)
- The Debian "server" (debian, p3/700, 256mb, 40gig, old hp omnibook with bad screen, runs ssh and squid)
This server was delivered a bit more assembled than the DL385 units. All I had to do was install the Intel Xeon CPU/heatsink (single unit unlike the 385 with AMD Opterons) and RAM.
