About the species:
The western green lizard belongs to the family Lacertidae. This is the family of the wall lizards, true lizards, or sometimes simply lacertas, which are native to Europe, Africa, and Asia. The group includes the genus Lacerta, which contains some of the most commonly seen lizard species in Europe. It is a diverse family with at least 300 species in 39 genera.
The lacerta bilineata is native to Andorra, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Monaco, Serbia, Slowenia, Spain, and Switzerland. It was introduced in Guernsey and Jersey in the Channel Isles and the United States, and there are also introduced colonies on the south coast of the U.K, notably around Poole Bay in Dorset.
DESCRIPTION: Adult western green lizards reach a length of 30 to 45 centimetres including tail (there may be regional differences regarding the size of the species). The tail may reach up to twice the body length. The average weight is about 35 grams. Males are generally a bit bigger than females, with a slightly bulkier head and body.
With females of the species colors and color patterns can vary greatly and range from dark green and brown to shining emerald green, turquoise and blue and everything in between, even typical male color patterns (see example photos here: www.lacerta-bilineata.com/post/western-green-lizard-lacer... ). Adult males tend to look more alike (though there are variations too), with their back usually a striking yellowish to emerald green interspersed with black dots, a yellow or yellow-green belly and blue face, all of which much more pronounced during mating season (see example photos here: www.lacerta-bilineata.com/lacerta-bilineata-species )
(Deutsch): Die Westliche Smaragdeidechse gehört zur Familie der Lacertidae, also der Echten Eidechsen (im Deutschen wird synonym oft einfach die Bezeichnung „Eidechsen“ verwendet), die in Europa , Afrika und Asien beheimatet sind . Die Gruppe umfasst die Gattung Lacerta, die einige der am häufigsten vorkommenden Eidechsenarten in Europa beinhaltet. Es ist eine vielfältige Familie mit mindestens 300 Arten in 39 Gattungen.
Die Westliche Smaragdeidechse gehört zur natürlichen Fauna in Andorra, Kroatien, Frankreich, Deutschland, Italien, Monaco, Serbien, Slowenien, Spanien und der Schweiz. Eingeführt wurde sie auf den Kanalinseln Guernsey und Jersey und in den Vereinigten Staaten sowie an der Südküste Großbritanniens; insbesondere in der Nähe von Poole Bay in Dorset gibt es grössere Kolonien.
BESCHREIBUNG/MERKMALE: Adulte Tiere erreichen eine Länge von 30 bis 45 Zentimetern einschließlich Schwanz (regionale Unterschiede hinsichtlich der Größe der Art sind wahrscheinlich). Der Schwanz kann das Doppelte der Körperlänge betragen. Das Durchschnittsgewicht beträgt ca. 35 Gramm. Männliche Tiere sind etwas größer, mit einem breiteren Kopf und Körper verglichen mit den Weibchen.
Bei den weiblichen Tieren können Farben und Farbmuster stark variieren; von braun, dunkelgrün bis smaragdgrün, türkis und blau; von gefleckt bis gestreift; alle Variationen sind möglich, auch typisch männliche Farben und Muster (Beispielfotos: de.lacerta-bilineata.com/post/westliche-smaragdeidechse-l... ). Adulte männliche Tiere haben ein etwas einheitlicheres Aussehen (obwohl es auch hier Variationen gibt), wobei der Rücken normalerweise eine auffällig gelblich-grüne bis smaragdgrüne Farbe aufweist, durchsetzt mit schwarzen Punkten. Der Bauch ist gelb bis gelbgrün; das Gesicht blaugrün bis blau, wobei sämtliche Farben während der Paarungszeit viel intensiver sind (Beispielfotos: de.lacerta-bilineata.com/lacerta-bilineata-species ).
The Golubac Fortress, also known as the Pigeon Town or Dove Castle, is a fortress near the Serbian town of Golubac and the Đerdap National Park. It is one of the most beautiful medieval fortresses on the Danube. In the place of the fortress was a Roman fortification named "Columbaria".
Meanders of the river Uvac, southern Serbia, this was my second attempt at this spot, the first one was in May 2017 when the road was atrocious and the light was duller than dishwater, now it's paved all the way to the parking area of the viewpoint. The Danube river at Djerdap national park in Serbia, the Romanian side is across the river. It's a relatively short hike to get there, I was the first one at the viewpoint that weekend morning, I didn't see anybody walking up, but saw close to a thousand people on the way down.
Bei unserem Besuch an der serbischen Strecke Niš - Dimitrovgrad trafen wir am 12.03.2023 auf eine alte Bekannte: Die nun als 662 002 von Global Neologistics eingesetzte ehemalige Wismut V300 004, bzw. ex 232 429, die erfreulicherweise ein neues Leben auf dem Balkan gefunden hat. Mit VTR 430 151 im Schlepp zog sie einen Kesselwagenzug durch Bela Palanka Richtung Niš.
Die Strecke sollte eigentlich schon seit 10 Jahren elektrifiziert sein, doch dahingehend tut sich nichts. Der Oberbau ist mittlerweile in einem sehr schlechten Zustand mit vielen Langsamfahrstellen.
Die Strecke Niš - Dimitrovgrad in Serbien ist eine wichtige, internationale Güterverkehrsstrecke für Züge Richtung Bulgarien oder weiter in die Türkei. Eigentlich sollte sie schon lange modernisiert und elektrifiziert sein, doch die Gegenwart zeigt eine extrem heruntergekommene Strecke mit vielen Langsamfahrstellen und teils nicht mehr funktionsfähigen Signalen. Aus diesem Grund wurde auch der Personenverkehr vor einigen Jahren eingestellt, auf der Straße ist man nämlich deutlich schneller.
Am Vormittag des 13.03.2023 trafen wir zunächst in Ostrovica auf einen Güterzug nach Niš. Dort war eine der wenigen Stellen, wo vormittags Züge westwärts im Licht waren. Ansonsten gab es dann nur noch Sicevo mit zumindest minimal Frontlicht, das war aber nur fünf Kilometer entfernt und wir standen weit weg von unserem Auto. Wir versuchten trotzdem mal eine Verfolgung und hatten den Zug überraschend früh schon wieder eingeholt. In Sicevo hatten wir dann noch einige Minuten Zeit für die Standpunktsuche. Für die fünf Kilometer zwischen den beiden Bildern benötigte der Zug (ohne Halt dazwischen) 18 Minuten. Zu sehen ist 661 124 der ŽS mit einer Schlange E-Wagen.

Happy Sunday to everyone, the house on the Drina river revisited after 4 years, with calmer water and lower water level than the last time, and the house is lit up at night now, it wasn't before.
The end?? Well I had yet another frustrating evening with flickr, my comments and faves didn't go through, and I got a bunch of the panda error page when I tried to open photos. That's it, I can't deal with a disfunctional site, too bad they charged my credit card for a renewal just a couple of weeks ago, I joined.... Instagram tonight, and lost even more hair trying to upload a photo, I failed, THAT bitch seems just as nasty as this one until I can figure it out, it seems you can upload easily from a phone but not from a PC, or am I wrong? Anyway since I paid for THIS bitch, I won't be leaving flickr immediately, just slowly phasing out over the next year or so, what a shame.
Sehr einladend für mit dem Flugzeug ankommende Touristen wirkt der Verkehrshalt Podgorica Aerodrom nicht wirklich, liegt er doch außerdem noch zwei Kilometer vom Flughafen entfernt.
461 041 passiert ohne Halt den Haltepunkt Podgorica Aerodrom als D 1130 von Bar nach Belgrad. Die wartenden Reisenden am Bahnsteig, die gerade ihr schattiges Plätzchen verlassen hatten und hofften, dass endlich ihr verspäteter Zug kommt, schauten in die Röhre, als der Schnellzug planmäßig durchfuhr.
Golubac fortress, Danube river, Serbia. The renovations, OK, the overdone restorations, weren't finished last year, now they are, I'm glad I visited the same place again, it brings a closure, last year the trail to this viewpoint wasn't open, so it had felt like unfinished business.
The Balkan Manhattan, or Hong Kong, at night, lack of flat ground forced architects to build up in the 1980's, yet another place nobody has ever heard of, and probably can't pronounce correctly (try uzhitse)
Die Felsenschlucht nördlich des kleinen Ortes Niševac gehört sicherlich zu den bekanntesten Motiven Serbiens. Doch auch auf der anderen Seite des Dorfes lässt sich die schöne Berglandschaft gut im Bild festhalten. 710 010 konnten wir hier am 12.03.2023 vom Hochstativ aus ablichten, als er unter der Zugnummer Re 2743 von Zajecar nach Niš fuhr.
Uvac Canyon – Hiking and exploring the Uvac Special Nature Reserve in Serbia
The Uvac (Serbian Cyrillic: Увац) is an international transboundary river that rises beneath the Golija Mountains and the Pešter Plateau, then flows through southwest Serbia and enters eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, where after 115 km it finally joins the Lim River Shortly before it flows into the Lim, Uvac forms the border between two countries for 10 kilometers. As Uvac winds its way through Serbia, it also loosely forms the northern border of the Raška region.
Der Uvac ( serbisch-kyrillisch : Увац ) ist ein internationaler grenzüberschreitender Fluss, der unter dem Golija -Gebirge und der Pešter- Hochebene entspringt, dann durch Südwestserbien fließt und nach Ostbosnien und Herzegowina übertritt , wo er nach 115 km schließlich auf den Lim -Fluss trifft Kurz bevor er jedoch in den Lim mündet, bildet Uvac für 10 Kilometer die Grenze zwischen zwei Ländern. Während Uvac sich durch Serbien schlängelt, bildet es auch locker die nördliche Grenze der Region Raška .

Golubac fortress, on the Danube riverfront, Serbia, the fortress has been under renovation for years, it's supposed to be finished in 2019, completely Disneyfied , with the grounds fenced off and closed after sunset. There are signs forbidding access all around this area, I didn't realize until the following morning that where I took this photo was also a "strictly forbidden" zone. I guess once the renovations are complete and there is lighting at night, the best place to take a photo is from the Romanian side across the river with a good telephoto lens!
Golubac Fortress on the Danube
The Golubac Fortress (Serbian Голубачки Град Golubački Grad), also known as Kolumbatz, Pigeon City or Pigeon Castle, is a fortress near the Serbian town of Golubac and the Djerdap National Park. It is one of the most important medieval fortresses on the Danube.

On the site of the fortress there was a Roman defensive building called Columbaria (= pigeon house). The derived Serbian name Golubački Grad or Golubac means pigeon town or pigeon castle. It is believed to have been built in the 14th century on terraced rocks by Serbian military builders during the reign of King Dušan.
The Golubac Fortress has an eventful history. Before it was built, there was a Roman settlement on this site. During the Middle Ages it was the scene of many battles, particularly between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. The city, with its strategically important location on the banks of the Danube, frequently changed its ruler, was destroyed and rebuilt and was alternately under Turkish, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Serbian and Austrian rule. In 1867 the Austrians handed them over to Serbia.
Seit Ausbruch der Corona-Pandemie fahren im Kosovo nur noch zwei Zugpaare zwischen der Hauptstadt Pristina und Peja. Am 20.06.2021 hält die aus Kroatien gebraucht gekauft 2620 016 mit dem IC761 nach Peja am Haltepunkt Dritan an. Die Wagen sind gebrauchte Silberlinge aus Deutschland, welche in Serbien aufgearbeitet wurden.
Since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, only two pairs of trains have been running between the capital Pristina and Peja in Kosovo. On June 20th, 2021, the 2620 016 bought used from Croatia stops with the IC761 to Peja at the Dritan stop. The wagons are used pieces of silver from Germany, which were refurbished in Serbia.
Der lateinische Gattungsname ‚Crocus‘ stammt von dem altgriechischen Wort ‚Κϱοκος / Krochos‘. Dies lässt sich ins deutsche mit „Eidotter“ übersetzen.
Der Gold-Krokus stammt ursprünglich aus Griechenland, Serbien, Bulgarien und die Pflanze ist auf bis zu 1.200 Metern zu finden.
Die griechische Mythologie hat wieder etwas zu bieten :
Ein sterblicher Jüngling mit Namen Krokus verliebte sich in die schöne Nymphe Smilax. Anfangs liebte sie ihn auch, fand ihn aber bald etwas lästig und wies ihn mehrmals zurück. So unglücklich war er, bis er schließlich an Liebeskummer starb. Die Götter hatten Mitleid mit ihm und waren von seinem Leiden so beeindruckt, dass sie ihn in einen Krokus verwandelten.
The Latin genus name 'Crocus' comes from the ancient Greek word 'Κϱοκος / Krochos'. This can be translated as

The gold crocus originally comes from Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria and the plant can be found at up to 1,200 meters.

A mortal youth named Crocus fell in love with the beautiful nymph Smilax. At first she loved him too, but soon found him a bit tiresome and rejected him several times. He was so unhappy that he finally died of lovesickness. The gods took pity on him and were so impressed by his suffering that they turned him into a crocus.
Meanders of Uvac river, southern Serbia, the light was crap, I waited more than an hour for an opening in the clouds, to no avail. I'm uploading these because it took a lot of effort to get there, the road was one of the most horrendous I've ever taken a normal car on, and the final 5 minutes of the trail to the viewing platform was super steep, it reminded me of my accident in Mexico.
Sremski Karlovci, Serbia, a lovely town along the Danube that is mot frequently visited, there's nothing spectacular there but it's a very charming place, it's also a good place to buy local wine and rakija, the quince rakija is exquisite.
