This was a bit of a Curate's Egg!

The first third starts with the Moon being mysteriously destroyed in the very first sentence and covers the initial reaction, the discovery that the resulting impacts of debris will scour the Earth's surface bare and the huge project to launch people and equipment into orbit in the hope that they, at least, might survive.

Part two continues the story starting from the start of the Earth's bombardment (the Hard Rain) up to the establishment of a tiny group of survivors on a still orbiting chunk of the Moon.

Section three starts after a jump of 5,000 years into the future with Mankind firmly established with hundreds of orbiting habitats and a huge reclamation project under way on the earth's surface.

I'd have been perfectly happy if he had stopped after 2/3rds of the book, before the 5,000 year gap! He could have written a sequel fleshing out the far future section instead. Or, indeed, not written the first 2/3rds at all but inserted the main events as background through a completely re-written, longer novel of the final 3rd. I'm also not fully convinced of some of his far future orbital mechanics with regard to giant objects orbiting Earth and changing direction very frequently!

Sorry, not that convinced by the big engineering (however spectacular), the future society that arises or some of the characters (the barman's a top secret agent!?)

And the origins of the three groups of survivors is particularly coincidental! One of the 'Eves' in orbit, her father, and her best friend's fiance!

In the afterward the author says he may write more using the background; maybe the fate of the vanished Mars mission will play a part!

And I think he's now hovering near the foot of my 'buy hardback on publication' list. Next one had better be good, and I don't think a sequel/companion will be appealing enough.

Apparently his next book will be a sequel to Reamde.

I liked it well enough but I'm not sure I'm that keen on that as his next project either!

Fall, Or Dodge in Hell was indeed related to Reamde and came out about a year ago in June 2019 (US edition) or July 2019 (UK edition) I made it about 20% of the way through before deciding that I didn't care enough to continue...

I may well read/reread his earlier books (I have, but haven't finished, his Baroque Cycle and also have several others I've enjoyed a lot)

Sentencing of Shane Bauer and Joshua Fattal -

We are deeply disappointed that Iranian judicial authorities have sentenced Shane Bauer and Joshua Fattal to 8 years in prison. We continue to call and work for their immediate release -- it is time for them to return home and be reunited with their families.

I join President Obama and the people of the United States in expressing our unflagging support for Shane, Joshua, Sarah and their families during this difficult time.

On the day that Karl's attacker was due to be sentenced. This time, postponed due to Covid 19. Now postponed provisionally until May 7th. Will the third attempt be successful?

one of my most respected and liked teachers made me slightly upset today .

genius, albeit brutally honest and realistic, he told me ,

"you'll be up there [amongst the top english students] but you'll never be the best"

to some my hurt feelings may seen silly , i suppose in some ways he was merely being honest as it's true , i've been around the top in all my SACs but never 'the best'

however i reject the notion that my capabilities regarding the english exam (which is in a looming two days i might add) can be summed up in the sentence

'you're good, but you'll never be the best'

you might not know . i could be the best

and if not . i'll be my best . which is all i (or anyone) can ask for

remember , you can only ever achieve to the extent you believe you can achieve .

i believe i can get those 10's .

perhaps it doesn't matter if you believe i can too .

The Illinois State Constitution declares: “all [prison] sentences shall be determined with the objective of restoring the offender to useful citizenship.” But what is a “useful citizen”? And, how can the state hold someone based on the ability to produce “usefulness” while full “useful citizenship” rights are never really restored to after serving a prison sentence? After completing a prison sentence, and even after parole, people are often excluded from housing options, job opportunities, and even access to higher education based solely on the conviction for which they served time.

In response to these questions artists in a class taught by Aaron Hughes made a series of portraits of their ideal citizens.

The students wrote one sentence using only pictographs. The sentences did not need to have 100% translation into English, but must be basically grammatically correct. They then wrote an essay on the history of pictographs, their uses both in ancient times and today, and why they were used.

a group of protester at altab ali park, london. in protest against war criminals of 1971 in bangladesh.

“Whereas it hath been represented unto us by the Reverend James John Hornby Rector of Winwick in the County of Lancaster and our Diocese of Chester That the Inhabitants of the Brynn and Garswood ends of the Township if Ashton-in-Makerfield in the Parish of Winwick in the said County being very much in want of a Convenient Chapel for the Public Worship of Almighty God according to the Liturgy of the United Church of England and Ireland a new Church has been erected and built on part of a piece or parcel of Land situate in the Township of Ashton aforesaid and conveyed by a certain Indenture of Bargain and Sale bearing date the first day of November in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and thirty seven and since duly enrolled in her Majesty's High Court of Chancery by Robert Barlow James Aspinall Thomas Aspinall and Margaret Aspinall therein respectively described To the Reverend James Slade The Reverend Henry John Gunning The Reverend Edmund Sibson The Honourable and Reverend Horace Powys and the Reverend Frank George Hopwood Upon the trusts therein mentioned and the residue of the said piece or parcel of Land hath been enclosed as a Cemetery for the Burial of the dead which said last mentioned piece of Ground contains one thousand seven hundred superficial square yards.

And whereas the said new Church has been finished and prepared for performance of divine Service and of Holy Offices therein,

And whereas The Reverend James John Hornby Clerk rector of the said Church of Winwick hath signified to us his intention of Endowing the said Church with the annual sum of Fifty pounds to be paid together with* the Pew rents as hereinafter mentioned to the Minister of the said Church for the time being. And we are now petitioned to consecrate the same accordingly.

We therefore proceeding in the Episcopal Authority belonging to us by Law and usage and first calling upon the most High God of Heaven and Earth Father Son and Holy Ghost for a Blessing upon our present purpose do hereby dedicate this building to the Worship of Almighty God according to the Liturgy and usages of the United Church of England and Ireland and we also set apart the Ground attached thereto as a Cemetery or place of Burial for the dead. And we consecrate this Church by the name of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Ashton-in-Makerfield in the Parish of Winwick in the County of Lancaster and separate it and the land attached thereto from all common and ordinary uses to remain from this time Holy Ground by virtue of this Sentence. And we further decree that the Maintenance of the Minister of the said Church the appointment of Wardens and other Officers the regulation of Pews and Pew rents shall be in accordance with the rules laid down in the Schedule hereto annexed.**

This Sentence of Consecration was openly read and promulg[at]ed upon Thursday the seventh day of June in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and thirty eight- \ [signed “J B, Chester”] In the presence of – [signatures of Chancellor of Chester, Rector of Winwick, Incumbent Minister HH Sherlock, Rector of Wigan etc].

*Additional text, partially illegible, evidently inserted here at some later time: “And whereas its is intended that the Brynn and Garswood ends [? of the township]...”.

**“Schedule referred to in the annexed Sentence of Consecration....-

That Thomas Clough and Henry Shaw be the first Wardens of the said Church;

That two fit and proper persons be appointed to Act as Churchwardens and two other fit and proper persons be appointed to Act as Sidesmen of the said Church yearly on Tuesday in Easter Week, one Churchwarden and one Sidesman to be chosen by the Incumbent for the time being of the said Church and the other Churchwarden and Sidesman by the holders of Pews of the said Church...”.

(The document then outlines the responsibilities of the aforementioned officers as to receipt of pew-rents, church maintenance, observance of “good order and decent behaviour” by congregation; reservation of pews numbered 41 and 62, and of certain other seats, for the free use of, respectively, the Minister and his family and “the Poor of the Brynn and Garswood end of the Township”; amounts payable (and timing/variation of payments) in respect of other seats and pews; allocation of pew rents for remuneration of clerk, sexton, organist etc; keeping of registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, with copies to be provided to the Rector Winwick “in order that they may be registered in the Register Books of the Parish Church of Winwick”; “fees for churchings burials and other ecclesiastical services” at Holy Trinity to be paid to the Incumbent and sexton thereof “and not to the Incumbent clerk or Sexton of the said Parish of Winwick or of the Chapel of Ashton”; liability of Incumbent to make customary payments to Bishop at Easter and “at every Triennial or Ordinary Episcopal Visitation”. A line in different handwriting, evidently included as an afterthought, says that “the Rector of Winwick for the time being shall be the Patron and have the [power?] of nominating a Minister to the said Church”.)

As reported in the 18 June 1838 edition of The Manchester Guardian (reprinted from The Wigan Gazette): “On Thursday afternoon the Lord Bishop of the Diocese consecrated a church lately erected at Downall-green, and also the Churchyard, in the presence of the Clergy of the neighbourhood including the Rev J J Hornby Rector of Winwick and the Rev H J Gunning, Rector of Wigan, and a congregation of respectable persons, who appeared deeply interested in the ceremony”.
