The Ring Road (Route 1) goes around the outskirts of Iceland and offers an amazing amount of versatility and beauty in it's landscapes.

This is Seljalandsfoss, which was one of my favorite waterfalls on our first trip to Iceland. It is 60 meters high and looks even more beautiful in the summer, with the lush green grass and flowered fields seeming to stretch for days into the distance along the cliff side.

From Wikipedia:

Seljalandsfoss is one of the best known waterfalls in Iceland. Seljalandsfoss is located in the South Region in Iceland right by Route 1 (Iceland) and the road that leads to Þórsmörk Road 249. The waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls and natural wonders in Iceland. The waterfall drops 60 meters and is part of the river Seljalands-river that has its origin in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajokull. One of the interesting things about this waterfall is the fact that visitors can walk behind it into a small cave. It was a waypoint during the first leg of The Amazing Race 6

Seljalandsfoss in southern Iceland. You can walk behind it and get yourself pretty wet but it's worth it.

Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall that can be fully encircled, situated on the South Coast of Iceland with a drop of 60 metres.

Due to the waterfall’s close proximity to the Ring Road and impressive natural features, it is one the country's most famous and visited falls. Majestic and picturesque, it is one of the most photographed features in all of Iceland.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall, part of the river Seljalandsá, has its origins underneath the glacier Eyjafjallajökull. The volcano beneath this ice cap was the one that erupted in 2010 and caused havoc at airports across Europe.

The cascade of the falls is relatively narrow but falls from a tall cliff that once marked the country's coastline, the sea is now located across a stretch of lowlands and is visible from the site.

Iceland August 2018

After spending the morning and early afternoon in Reykjavik we set out on the Ring Road, Route 1, for our first stage of our trip.

This is the first of many waterfalls! Seljalandsfoss is one of the most well known waterfalls, as it is both picturesque and easily accessible. It is possible to walk around behind the waterfall (only getting a little damp in the process!) so you get a great all round perspective.

Taken from the back of the waterfall looking out towards the coast. Shame the light was rather flat!

Seljalandsfoss waterfall - Iceland

Seljalandsfoss is one of the most famous waterfalls of Iceland. It is very picturesque and therefore its photo can be found in many books and calendars. It was a waypoint during the first leg of The Amazing Race 6. Seljalandsfoss is situated in between Selfoss and Skógafoss at the road crossing of Route 1 (the Ring Road) with the track going into Þórsmörk. This waterfall of the river Seljalandsá drops 60 meters (200 ft) over the cliffs of the former coastline. It is possible to go behind the waterfall.

Seljalandsfoss is without doubt the most famous waterfall in Iceland. It's packed with tourists from morning to evening so it's pretty hard to get a good shot at it. By the time I got there, too many buses and people were spoiling the view, so I decided to take it from a distance, behind the road in order to hide them.

Iceland

This is the view looking at the path behind the falls at Seljalandsfoss in southern Iceland. The water falls 60m from the cliff down into this pool.

It's quite clear that summer has arrived!

This is Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Me and my friend drove around South-Iceland last weekend and photographed popular tourist attractions...

I used a 10 stop Nd filter and a Polarizer for this shot...

Bulbed for about 70 seconds, at F/11 and ISO 100...

Oh god how I love Iceland...

P.s. I have a 50 x 75cm print of this for sale, if anyone is interested...

Our guide told us that two days prior to our arrival at this location, a boulder had fallen in the area behind the main falls. While waiting for his charge in the adjacent parking lot, he had heard a loud noise - which he thought unusual. No reported injuries as the area is now closed off...

Needless to say we could not explore behind the falls, but managed to get close enough to feel the spray and of course snap a few photos.

I had remembered that I'd taken a select number of RAW images while on my trip to Iceland last year. Now that I have Photomatix I realized that I could create HDR images from these single RAW files. It's not a true exposure blend but with a moving object like a waterfall it's difficult to get multiple-exposure HDRs without serious ghosting. I never posted this before because the image was not all that remarkable. After being processed through Photomatix it really brings out the details in the sky and in the shadowed recesses in the rock overhang. As always, I try to process any HDRs to avoid halos and hyper-saturated colors.

“We need the tonic of wildness...At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.” ~Henry David Thoreau
