The Selimiye Mosque (Turkish: Selimiye Camii) is a mosque in the city of Edirne, Turkey. The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Selim II and was built by architect Mimar Sinan between 1568 and 1574. It was considered by Sinan to be his masterpiece and is one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture.
This grand mosque stands at the center of a külliye (complex of a hospital, school, library and/or baths around a mosque) which comprises a medrese (Islamic academy teaches both Islamic and Scientific lessons), a dar-ül hadis (Al-Hadith school), a timekeeper's room and an arasta (row of shops). It also contains a Bayezid II Külliye Health Museum, now a museum. In this mosque Sinan employed an octagonal supporting system that is created through eight pillars incised in a square shell of walls. The four semi domes at the corners of the square behind the arches that spring from the pillars, are intermediary sections between the huge encompassing dome (31.25m diameter with spherical profile) and the walls.
While conventional mosques were limited by a segmented interior, Sinan's effort at Edirne was a structure that made it possible to see the mihrab from any location within the mosque. Surrounded by four tall minarets in, the Mosque of Selim II has a grand dome atop it. Around the rest of the mosque were many additions: libraries, schools, hospices, baths, soup kitchens for the poor, markets, hospitals, and a cemetery. These annexes were aligned axially and grouped, if possible. In front of the mosque sits a rectangular court with an area equal to that of the mosque. The innovation however, comes not in the size of the building, but from the organization of its interior. The mihrab is pushed back into an apse-like alcove with a space with enough depth to allow for window illumination from three sides. This has the effect of making the tile panels of its lower walls sparkle with natural light. The amalgamation of the main hall forms a fused octagon with the dome-covered square. Formed by eight massive dome supports, the octagon, is pierced by four half dome covered corners of the square. The beauty resulting from the conformity of geometric shapes engulfed in each other was the culmination of Sinan's life long search for a unified interior space.

The initially wooden barracks constructed by the renowned Armenian architect Krikor Balyan was burnt down in 1806 by revolting Janissaries, who were against the reforms. Ordered by Sultan Mahmud II, rebuilding of the barracks in stone began in 1825 and it was completed on February 6, 1828. It is a gigantic rectangle building (200 x 267 metres) with a large parade ground in the center. The structure has three floors on three wings and two floors only on the eastern wing due to inclined terrain.[2] During the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid I, the barracks were renovated twice, first in 1842–1843 and again in 1849–1850. During this process, a tower seven stories in height was added to each of the four corners, giving the barracks the look they have today.
During the Crimean War (1854-1856), the barracks was allocated to the British Army, which was on the way from Britain to the Crimea. After the troops of the 33rd and 41st left for the front, the barracks was converted into a temporary military hospital.
On November 4, 1854, Florence Nightingale arrived in Scutari with 38 volunteer nurses. They cared for thousands of wounded and infected soldiers, and drastically reduced the high mortality rate by improving the sanitary living conditions until she returned home in 1857 as a heroine.
Around 6,000 soldiers died in the Selimiye Barracks during the war, mostly as the result of cholera epidemic. The dead were buried at a plot next to the barracks, which became later the Haydarpaa Cemetery.
Today, the northmost tower of the barracks is a museum.

Islamic calligraphy, equally known as Arabic calligraphy, is the art of writing, and by extension, of bookmaking.[1] This art has most often employed the Arabic script, throughout many languages. Calligraphy is especially revered among Islamic arts since it was the primary means for the preservation of the Qur'an.
Throughout Islamic history, the work of calligraphers was collected and appreciated. Consideration of figurative art as idolatrous led to calligraphy and abstract figures becoming the main forms of artistic expression in Islamic cultures.[2]
Arabic, Persian and Ottoman Turkish calligraphy is associated with geometric Islamic art (the Arabesque) on the walls and ceilings of mosques as well as on the page. Contemporary artists in the Islamic world draw on the heritage of calligraphy to use calligraphic inscriptions or abstractions in their work.
Calligraphic scripts
The first Arabic script to gain popularity was the Kufic script, which was created in 537. Kufic is angular, made of square and short horizontal strokes, long verticals, and bold, compact circles. It was the main script used to copy the Qur'an for three centuries. Its static aspect made it suitable for monumental inscriptions, too. It developed many serifs (small decorations added to each character).
More often used for casual writing was the cursive Naskh script, with rounder letters and thin lines. As techniques for writing in this style were refined, it came to be preferred to Kufic for copying the Qur'an. Naskh is the first script taught to most children. Almost all printed material in Arabic is in Naskh so, to avoid confusion, children are taught to write in the same script. It is also clearer and easier to decipher.
In the 13th century, the Thuluth script took on the ornamental role formerly associated with the Kufic script. Thuluth means "one third"; the form of Thuluth is based on the principle that one third of each letter slides downward. Thus it has a strong cursive aspect and is usually written in ample curves.
After Persia was conquered by Arabs in the 7th century, it became common to write Persian in Arabic script. The Persians contributed the Ta'liq and Nasta'liq styles to Arabic calligraphy. Nasta'liq is extremely cursive, with exaggeratedly long horizontal strokes. One of its peculiarities is that vertical strokes lean to the right rather than (as more commonly) to the left, making Nasta'liq writing flow particularly well. The Persians also developed a style called shekasteh ('broken' in Persian). Shekasteh has seldom been used for scripting Arabic texts, though it is an Arabic calligraphy style.
The Diwani script is a cursive style of Arabic calligraphy developed during the reign of the early Ottoman Turks (16th and early 17th centuries). It was invented by Housam Roumi and reached its height of popularity under Süleyman I the Magnificent (1520–66). As decorative as it was communicative, Diwani was distinguished by the complexity of the line within the letter and the close juxtaposition of the letters within the word.
A variation of the Diwani, the Diwani Al Jali, is characterized by its abundance of diacritical and ornamental marks.
Finally, the most common script for everyday use is Ruq'ah (also known as Riq'a). Simple and easy to write, its movements are small, without much amplitude. It is the one most commonly seen. It is considered a step up from Naskh script, which children are taught first. In later grades they are introduced to Ruq'ah.

Selimiye mosque
Right at the heart of the old city of North Nicosia is the Selimiye Camii (or mosque), housed in the former St Sophia Cathedral. There has been a religious building on this site since 1193, when a small church was built for the coronation of King Amaury in 1197. (You can still see marble from this original church incorporated in to the north doorway.) Life in modern North Nicosia centres around this building, so it’s a "must see" during your North Cyprus excursion.

The foundations for the much grander French-style cathedral were laid in 1209, but the cathedral itself was not consecrated until 1326. Work on the great façade still continued after this date, as records show that the men working on it were granted an indulgence by papal decree in 1347. Even today, the towers are unfinished, and the flat roof (a peculiarity of Gothic churches in Cyprus) makes it less imposing from the side than many of its European counterparts.
St Sophia in North Nicosia: Surviving through the centuries
The cathedral was originally quite grandly decorated with statues, a painted screen, choir stalls and paintings in the vault itself. However, the ravages of invasion by the Genoese in 1373, the Mamelukes in 1426 and two earthquakes in 1491 and 1547 all took their toll on the building and its contents.
When the Ottomans converted the cathedral to the Aya Sofya Camii in 1570, they stripped out all the contents, especially any remaining representations of the human form, so that the only remaining statuary in St Sophia’s is now outside. (A couple of tombstones still remain under the mosque’s brightly colour carpets.) Despite further earthquakes in the 18th century, the old building still stands strong today. The mosque was only renamed the Selimiye Camii mosque in 1954, in honour of Selim II, the sultan at the time of the Ottoman invasion [1571] of Cyprus.
The Selimiye Mosque and its Minarets, North Nicosia
The front porch is as grand an entrance as ever graced a European cathedral, with fine carvings all around the three doors. The west window dominates the façade, although the twin towers designed to match this window were never completed. Ever resourceful, the invading Ottoman used the tower bases to add two minarets to their newly-converted mosque. Right up until 1959, the muezzin had to climb 170 steps five times every day to call the faithful to prayer; now a recorded message and loudspeaker do the work instead! You can still see the minarets towering above the old city buildings from across North Nicosia.
Inside the Selimiye Camii, the plain interior gives a spacious and serene feel to this grand building. The original cathedral features have been carefully reused, such that the old lady chapel now contains the mithrab that orientates the mosque towards Mecca.
The best views of the mosque’s south wall and its impressive flying buttresses are from the café housed in the former Chapter House.

At the Bulgarian siege of Edirne in 1915, the dome of the mosque is hit by Bulgarian artillery. Since the dome is built extremely strong, the mosque survived the assult with only some damages at the coating of the dome. With Atatürk's order, it has not been restored since then, to warn the next generations.

Maybe it was the warm sunny late October weather, or the peace and quiet and lack of tourists, but from the moment I set my eyes on the four towering minarets, I fell in love with this building. The atmosphere reminded us of the Yesil (Green) Mosque in Bursa, but this was even more magnificent. I would say that it is the most beautiful, graceful building I have ever seen in my life.

The Persians also developed a style called shekasteh ('broken' in Persian). Shekasteh has seldom been used for scripting Arabic texts, though it is an Arabic calligraphy style.
The Diwani script is a cursive style of Arabic calligraphy developed during the reign of the early Ottoman Turks (16th and early 17th centuries). It was invented by Housam Roumi and reached its height of popularity under Süleyman I the Magnificent (1520–66). As decorative as it was communicative, Diwani was distinguished by the complexity of the line within the letter and the close juxtaposition of the letters within the word.
A variation of the Diwani, the Diwani Al Jali, is characterized by its abundance of diacritical and ornamental marks.
Finally, the most common script for everyday use is Ruq'ah (also known as Riq'a). Simple and easy to write, its movements are small, without much amplitude. It is the one most commonly seen. It is considered a step up from Naskh script, which children are taught first. In later grades they are introduced to Ruq'ah.

The Bedestan is to be found immediately adjacent in the south of the Selimiye Mosque and is an amalgamation of two churches. One dedicated to St Nicholas of the English and the other dedicated to The Virgin Mary. It became the Orthodox Metropolitan cathedral and during Ottoman rule was turned into a covered market (that’s the meaning of Bedestan).
For many years this building was closed and in a ruinous state with its arches and columns propped up by scaffolding. A five year restoration programme has now been completed and part of the building has been given a new roof and a new lease of life. The southern side retains its beautiful Gothic arches that once separated the two aisles and these have been filled with large plate glass doors flooding the interior with light and creating an exhibition hall that can been used for conferences and seminars.
The restoration work was financed by a donation from the UN as part of the ongoing programme for the renovation of many old buildings in the Capital City of Cyprus, Nicosia.
The building is now open to the public except on bank holidays.

The Selimiye Mosque (Turkish: Selimiye Camii) is a mosque in the city of Edirne, Turkey. The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Selim II and was built by architect Mimar Sinan between 1568 and 1574. This grand mosque stands at the center of a külliye (complex of a hospital, school, library and/or baths around a mosque) which comprises a medrese (Islamic academy teaches both Islamic and Scientific lessons), a dar-ül hadis (Al-Hadith school), a timekeeper's room and an arasta (row of shops). It also contains a Bayezid II Külliye Health Museum, now a museum. In this mosque Sinan employed an octagonal supporting system that is created through eight pillars incised in a square shell of walls. The four semi domes at the corners of the square behind the arches that spring from the pillars, are intermediary sections between the huge encompassing dome (31.25m diameter with spherical profile) and the walls.
While conventional mosques were limited by a segmented interior, Sinan's effort at Edirne was a structure that made it possible to see the mihrab from any location within the mosque. Surrounded by four tall minarets in, the Mosque of Selim II has a grand dome atop it. Around the rest of the mosque were many additions: libraries, schools, hospices, baths, soup kitchens for the poor, markets, hospitals, and a cemetery. These annexes were aligned axially and grouped, if possible. In front of the mosque sits a rectangular court with an area equal to that of the mosque. The innovation however, comes not in the size of the building, but from the organization of its interior. The mihrab is pushed back into an apse-like alcove with a space with enough depth to allow for window illumination from three sides. This has the effect of making the tile panels of its lower walls sparkle with natural light. The amalgamation of the main hall forms a fused octagon with the dome-covered square. Formed by eight massive dome supports, the octagon, is pierced by four half dome covered corners of the square. The beauty resulting from the conformity of geometric shapes engulfed in each other was the culmination of Sinan's life long search for a unified interior space.

At the Bulgarian siege of Edirne in 1915, the dome of the mosque is hit by Bulgarian artillery. Since the dome is built extremely strong, the mosque survived the assult with only some damages at the coating of the dome. With Atatürk's order, it has not been restored since then, to warn the next generations.
