Protesters flee as they realise that a large number of Egyptian security forces and pro-government plain clothes militia are still stationed in the Egyptian Institute just south of Tahrir Square. As they make their escape through the battered gateway of the institute's gardens, one protester falls and is beaten. But it's too risky for other protesters to delay to help him. Five minutes later hundreds of military police and other security forces entered Tahrir Square itself beating and arresting anyone they found, including women and children.
You might notice the numerous stones lying across the paved entrance. They had been thrown at protesters earlier by the militia who had taken up positions on the roof of the Egyptian Institute which overlooks a key road leading up to Tahrir Square. Also note the large metal plates, which some protesters had brought as shields to protect themselves from the stones being thrown down from the roof.
Today, many Egyptians still live in fear of the police and state security forces and tens of thousands of political prisoners remain in Egypt's prisons, including the notorious Tora prison complex in Cairo.
Britain and the United States both continue to be strong supporters of the current dictatorship providing essential military support and economic investment. The West does not want to see any type of democracy, because the majority of Egyptians do not support Western backing for Israel's apartheid regime or the propping up of regional dictatorships. Meanwhile western corporations enjoy all the advantages of dealing with a corrupt government that is not concerned with protecting the environment and ensures a passive, fragmented and cheap labour force.
