BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (October 20, 2016) – Residents of a southwest Birmingham neighborhood can now grow their own vegetables. The Jefferson County Conservation District secured a national grant to build a hoop house in the Hillman Neighborhood, considered a food desert. A planting ceremony on Thursday officially opened the structure for use.
“We are honored to have been selected ¬for this grant. Fresh food, especially in this part of the Birmingham-metro area, is hard to come by. We’re excited about how this funding will impact the community,” said John W. Morris, Chairman, Jefferson County Conservation District.
A hoop house is a cost-effective, non-permanent farming structure frequently found in urban areas. This particular hoop house is located on the same site where a tornado destroyed a similar structure in December 2015.
Sen. Priscilla Dunn (D-Bessemer) and Rep. Merika Coleman (D-Birmingham) joined Conservation District representatives and project partners for the planting ceremony.
"It was so disappointing when the beautiful garden Hillman Neighborhood residents cultivated was destroyed by the tornado. I am thankful the Jefferson County Conservation District made a place again to grow vegetables; and I am thrilled about how it will impact education in the community. I’m grateful that our kids, especially those growing up in an urban area, get to learn and witness firsthand food growing organically from the land," said Rep. Coleman.
“I’m proud of the residents for not giving up on the community. Revitalizing Hillman is a worthy endeavor and I look forward to seeing how the hoop house plays a role in the mission,” said Sen. Dunn.
In addition to construction of the hoop house, the grant totaling $50,000 is funding full-time project coordinator Virginia Ward of Bessemer to manage the hoop house, conduct educational workshops, and ensure the community is getting the most out of the farming structure. Ward has 25 years of experience in agriculture and community organizing.
“I am delighted to have this opportunity to help revitalize the neighborhood,” said Ward.
Culinary students at Lawson State Community College and Wenonah High School will also assist by teaching food preparation and herb production.
The Conservation District is working in close partnership with the Hillman Neighborhood Association, Southwest Birmingham Urban Farm, Project Hopewell, Inc., and Hopewell Women in Agriculture to implement the grant.
Dozens of other applicants across the country competed for the National Association of Conservation Districts-funded grant and Jefferson County is the only conservation district in Alabama to become a recipient.

As did towns and villages up and down the country, Chatteris in Cambridgeshire held its service at the town’s memorial and church, after a parade of dignitaries, military and civilian members arrived to lay their wreaths.

This weekly Thursday meet during the summer is based at the sea front in the sea side resort of Weston Super Mare, North Somerset, UK.
It is organised by Members of the British legion, all bike donate £1 to enter and all proceeds go the charity The Poppy Appeal.
Images can be obtained for a donation of £5 per image, the full image will then be e-mailed to you.
