Pacific Scotti and Henry Robey walk with their signs in front of the Safeway Store at 5660 Annapolis Road June 16, 1969 on the seventh day of their strike as milk truck and dairy workers expand their picketing from the milk plant to the stores.

The following day, the clerks union and meat cutters unions urged their members to respect the picket lines

Five other dairies—Embassy, Thompson, Alexandria, Harvey and Sealtest—all settled before a strike deadline.

Teamsters Local 246 of the Milk Drivers and Dairy Employees Union called the strike June 9th. The number of workers involved was only about 80 and affected only Safeway’s Lucerne brand, but the addition of the clerks and meat cutters changed the complexion of the strike.

Teamsters Local 639 also supported the strike, which limited deliveries of other food items to the stores.

This began limiting or shutting down many of the 160 Safeway stores across the region.

The settlement on July 25th provided for an increase in commission for drivers and wage increases for plant employees. The vote was 48-13 in favor of the proposed contract.

These signs were actual vintage signs found in this barn when they cleaned it up for this event. The barn itself is nearly 200 years old. This sign looks like it's from the 1940s maybe?

The union was relatively small in number and affected only Safeway’s Lucerne brand, but on June 17th, the clerks and meat cutters’ unions threw their support behind the drivers and urged their members not to cross picket lines.

Sealtest Facility factory - St. Louis, Missouri, 1972

The Sealtest brand was established by National Dairies in 1934, when it changed the name of its ice cream from Tasty to Sealtest. It was sold at Sealtest Ice Cream Parlors and Sealtest Ice Cream Wagons. When Sealtest began mass production, it sold 267,000 gallons during its first year. By the 1960s and 1970s, production had grown to 4.5 million gallons per year. In 1993, Unilever, the largest ice cream marketer in the world, acquired Sealtest and combined it with the Good Humor company. Sealtest ice cream is no longer made.

I don't usually do milk crates, but look at the brand names on these.

Hood. I remember Hood pre-packaged ice cream cones. The logo had a cow above the word Hood. There are still a couple Hood products in the grocery, but when they removed the cow, the thrill of eating it was gone.

Sealtest. Sealtest had a full line of dairy products when I was little. They sponcered TV shows and ran full page ads in the newspaper. It was nice to see this name again, though it looks like it's a division of New England Dairies, which brings me to my next question. What's this doing down here in South Jersey?

Now, go back up to the Hood crate and read the warning. It reads, 'if your caught'. What's funny, is that I ~was~ seen taking this picture.

Today is the last day of winter. Enjoy your weekend !!

The Sealtest Dairy Company - St. Louis, Missouri, 1956

2901 Campbell Avenue. The following year, this building was torn down and replaced with a new, larger one, set back from the road with more customer parking space.

The motto of this local chain which numbered seven stores was "Fare Better at Fair-Way." Some of the brand names seen in the window and on signs are Dash, Tide, Cheer, Duz, Rinso, Silver Dust, Sealtest, Purina, Kool and L&M (cigarettes)

Notice the pair of red keys on the sign on top of the diner and the pairs of yellow keys painted on the sides of the building. The keys are positioned across each other. In other words, they're cross(ed) keys, quite appropriate for an eatery named the Cross Keys Diner.

Signs on diner: "Cross Keys Diner. Air Conditioned Dining Room. Sealtest Ice Cream."

Printed on the other side: "Cross Keys Diner. New Oxford, Pa. On Lincoln Highway, 10 Miles East of Gettysburg. Air-Conditioned Dining Room with Seating Capacity of 70. Good Food - Service - Cleanliness - Courtesy. Sanitary Rest Rooms - 24 Hour Service. John E. George - Prop. and Owner. Est. 1937. Tel. 9129. Mellinger Studios, Lancaster, Penna. 82847."

Here is another one of dad's Sealtest buddies. Looks like he is back at the loading dock. Anyone know him? Taken by Stanley Gregory with an Argus camera.

The reason I decided this was a 1962 package is because they usually promoted an offer like this for about a year, give or take.
