The Kyozo (経蔵) was built in 1784 and is one of the buildings which remained unburnt in the air raid of World War II (together with the five-story pagoda). It houses all the Buddhist scriptures in revolving hexagonal bookshelves.

This was my fourth project for S260. I had to get inspiration from an object in the IU art museum and I chose a pair of Islamic ties. I took a shape seen a lot in Islamic art and made four walls with four openings drawn from The Mausoleum of Isma‘il b. Ahmad in Bukhara from the early 10th c. I also drew from the idea of Christian art having Islamic influence by including inspiring scripture references on each side. The inside is gold glaze and the outside is white, blue, and turquoise glazes as are a lot of Islamic art work and architecture decorations.
