On 'Leave it to Beaver' whenever one of Beaver's friends attempts to get him to do something which he already knows he shouldn't do, and he resists and gives the reason why he won't do it, the friend then begins a series of counter-arguments which eventually make it seem like the smart, correct thing is do do what they originally suggested. Beaver caves-in and against has better judgment goes along with the friend's suggestion. Of course everything goes bad and Beaver gets into a series of actions and/or lies to try and hide his misdeed.

Variations of this theme have appeared numerous times on TV shows ever since. Sadly, many shows don't include the devil advocate friend and just include the main character showing very little restraint at trying to the right thing... or no attempt at all.

Daily we have something or someone tell us all the good reasons we should do something which our conscience and better judgment plead with us not to do. So many personal problems as well as problems throughout society happen when we listen to the wrong voice. If we can't learn from our own mistakes, let's at least learn from Beaver's.
