Film director/screenwriter Eric Red (The Hitcher, Near Dark, Cohen and Tate, Body Parts, 100 Feet) offers up a zombie story set in space. On a manned NASA space ship millions of miles from Earth, a terrifying malfunction occurs in the cryogenic hypersleep pods containing the hibernating astronauts, turning most of the crew into the violently brain-dead. In this five-issues series by Red and artist Nick Stakal (Hyde), a handful of outnumbered astronauts awaken intact from their artificial slumber to find themselves pitted against murderous zombies running amok on the ship.

Hollywood screenwriter Matthew Mouat (and ghostwriter), an old friend of mine, Matt kindly allowed me to take his portrait at Chateau Marmont, where he lives part of the year in a bungalow writing and re-writing scripts for film studios. The only downside to this lifestsyle (''I can't own a cat''). He's working on something for Paramount so I stopped by to bother him and have brunch.

Bagi and his grandparents live a nomadic life herding sheep in the frozen hills of Mongolia. Their pristine world is disrupted when a military convoy arrives, letting Bagi's family and others know that a plague has struck the animals in their region and they must relocate to a mining town, complete with high-rise apartments.
In their first fiction film, documentary filmmakers Jessica Woodworth and Peter Brosens apply a distinctly impressionistic style to an original story with haunting themes. Capitalism is expanding into the most remote of regions and creates ongoing tensions between the past and the future, creation and destruction, and accepting or denying one's fate.
Featuring remarkably meditative performances by Batzul Khayankhyarvaa as Bagi and Tserendarizav Dashnyam as the shamaness, Khadak starkly contrasts the richness of nomadic Mongolian life against the imposed modern city life that Bagi and his family must adjust to. But in the midst of that stark transition, Bagi begins to accept his fate and starts traveling between the natural world and a larger spirit world, as he was meant to.
In its filmic eloquence, Khadak is itself raw material for a potential personal experience and a reminder of the harsh laws of the universe that many of us seem to forget.— N. Bird Runningwater

He was also executive producer for “Ukraine on Fire” which attempted to show the history behind the divisions in Ukraine. Stone has always been critical of American foreign policy but has become more and more controversial, to many, in recent years.
Today he posted his thoughts on what he calls “potential Neocon objectives” in Ukraine.
“I’ve been following the Ukraine situation since 2014 with Robert Parry leading the way as a teacher. I’ve followed the burnings in Odessa, the persecution without legal rights and murders of journalists, majors, politicians, and citizens. I’ve followed the banning of the main opposition party, which had higher polls than the Zelenskyy government. I’ve been shocked by the sheer hatred expressed against the Russian-Ukrainian minority. It’s a long sad story devolving from the 2014 coup, co-engineered by the U.S., which stripped Ukraine of its neutrality and made it vociferously anti-Russian; in the eight years since, some 14,000 innocent people in the Ukraine have been killed, non of which was seriously covered by our media.I’ve watched with mounting fear these past weeks as Victoria Nuland once again emerged out of the blue, warning the Russians and us - - the target audience - - that if the Russians use a nuclear device of any kind, there’ll be hell to pay.

Saturday was pretty epic. I took a day off of working on my Sundance Screenwriters App to go with Stefanie to LA to the experience known as hitRECord at the Movies.
We treated it like a road trip. Our first stop was Costa Mesa to have Coolhaus ice cream sandwiches. AMAZING. Stop two was the Getty where we spent a few hours wandering the gardens and taking pictures. It was an amazing day to be outdoors and it was a beautiful stop. We finally landed at the Vista Theatre for hitrecord.
I watched the hitrecord Summer in the City shows last summer and wanted to be there, so it was already a plus to be able to go to one of the live shows this time, but it was truly legendary. Jared Geller the producer chose me as one of the recorders to help by recording Joseph Gordon-Levitt's entrance to start the show and Joe talked to me (and recognized me from the site!). I also met Marke, the creative genius behind The Made Shop.
I would have loved to see more hitrecorders but it was so chaotic it didn't happen. Maybe next time I'll need a "mrbosslady" name tag so people recognize me. :)

10-23-19 | Sun-E Photo of the Day: The Department of Media and Communication; Project Write, Incorporated; the Shenandoah Valley Writing Project; the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema; and Four Color Fantasies collaborated to present a Young Screenwriters Conference on Oct. 12, in Henkel Hall.
The keynote speaker and workshop presenter was Joe Kelly of the Man of Action writers group. Kelly is the writer of the graphic novel, "I Kill Giants," as well as the screenwriter of the film adapted from the book. Man of Action writes for Cartoon Network and currently writes for "Ben 10" and "Generator Rex." Kelly is also the writer for Deadpool comics.
More than 60 students and their advisers spent the morning with Kelly, ate in the dining hall, and participated in workshops led by Shenandoah instructors Assistant Professor of Media & Communication Kelley Crowley, Ph.D.; Director in Residence-Film Production Program and Adjunct Instructor Blayne Weaver; and Director of the Film Studio at Shenandoah Paul DiFranco.
