The past weeks we had an always changing weather - up in the mountains it was snowing , the snow was melting and meanwhile it snowed again...The typical weather for February.

The poem " Der Februar" by German author, poet, screenwriter and satirist Erich Kästner describes this month so well. (From the cycle of poems: "The 13 Months").

Sorry please, in German only.

________

mustert uns Prinz Karneval.

Aschermittwoch starrt durchs Fenster.

Und die Zeit verläßt den Saal.

Pünktlich legt sie in die Truhe

das Vorüber und Vorbei.

Pünktlich holt sie aus der Truhe

Sorgenkleid und Einerlei.

Nordwind bläst. Und Südwind weht.

Und es schneit. Und taut. Und schneit.

Und indes die Zeit vergeht,

bleibt uns doch nur eins: die Zeit.

This little guy.. looks so serious! Studious perhaps? Perhaps he is an author? Maybe a screenwriter (in SL who needs that)? Perhaps a man (dog) of many words? After all how cute can this be?

And who do you think you are?

Runnin' 'round leaving scars

Collecting your jar of hearts

And tearing love apart

You're gonna catch a cold

From the ice inside your soul

So don't come back for me

Who do you think you are?

I hear you're asking all around

I hope, you all had a good start to the New Year :-)

A poem from a wonderful small book I love so much: the poetic cycle "The 13 months"by German Author Erich Kästner (23 February 1899 – 29 July 1974). It is his last poetry book.

Kästner was author, pacifist, poet, screenwriter and satirist, known primarily for his humorous, socially astute poems and for children's books including 'Emil and the Detectives'. He received the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1960 for his autobiograph' 'Als ich ein kleiner Junge war'. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times.

The asteroid 12318 'Kästner' is named after him :-)

Kriebstein Castle is one of the most beautiful and, for me, most impressive castles in Germany. I've admired them so many times in other photographers' photos. But although it is in Saxony, and therefore not that far from my home, I have never managed to drive past it myself.

I have now changed that and spent a night in a parking lot directly below the castle. So I had a photo tour in the evening and one yesterday morning.

And there I stood, on the banks of the river Zschopau in the first light of day, and I was overwhelmed. A screenwriter could not have dreamed up this scene better, with the wafts of mist gliding across the mirror-like surface of the water.

Some other perspectives of the castle and the surrounding area will follow, because this visit was more than worth it.

Don't Panic is a phrase on the cover of *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy*, by Douglas Noel Adams.* The phrase and book originated in 1978 as a BBC radio comedy before becoming much, much more.

An old sewing machine needle supports the old button with two vintage buttons behind it. The Panic button measures less than .75cm /0.3 inches. Fun lens! The streaming or expanding light is deliberate ;-)

"You gotta get up early in the morning to catch a fox and stay up late at night to get a mink." - Mae West (American actress, singer, comedian, screenwriter, and playwright).

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 18th of October is “fluffy”. I originally had an idea, and photographed it to post for the theme, but then I received a beautiful birthday present from my mother which was equally perfect for the theme, and even more beautiful (I think). This is a 1950s Lucite brooch made in New York. The 1930s inspired lady wears a grey felt pillbox hat with a black bow with a net veil. She wears pearls around her neck and a garnet coloured stone earring. However it is her mink stole that is the most eye catching of her accessories. Made of real mink, her stole has been fashioned with a head with tiny pearl bead buttons for eyes. It is so lovely, soft and fluffy. I hope you like my choice for the theme and that it makes you smile!

“People who keep stiff upper lips find that it’s damn hard to smile.” - Judith Guest (American novelist and screenwriter.)

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 4th of October is “lips”. In this case, I have opted to photograph the father stylised cupid’s bow lips of one of my German half-dolls made by Dressel and Kister, who were famous for making high quality dolls. Her 1920s cupid’s bow lips are (or rather were) modish for the times she was made in the 1920s, yet they are at odds with the rest of her garb, which is very romanticised English late Seventeenth Century Nell Gwynne style, where she wears a floppy lilac coloured hat decorated with feathers and a blue blouse with lace at the collar and cuffs, rater reminiscent of some of the pre-war advertisements for Yardley’s English Lavender Soap. In spite of this contradiction, she is by far one of my finest painted half-dolls and was a recent acquisition from a small antiques and curios shop. She came home along with three other German half-dolls (as if I need any more) which I have added to my ever expanding collection. I am a hopelessly voracious collector of objects! I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!

The "half-doll" is a dainty porcelain or bisque figurine, fashionable in the early Twentieth Century with an upper body, head, arms, but no legs. These dolls were produced in the thousands at the height of their popularity by German factories such as Dressel and Kister, Heubach, Goebel and Kestner. Later they were produced in France, America and later still, in Japan. They commonly served as handles and toppers for fabric covers made for powder boxes on ladies’ dressing tables and small brushes, however they were also made for jewellery boxes, pincushions, tea cosies and other covers. In this case, my German half-doll with her stylised and romanticised Seventeenth Century style dress and picture hat, would have been made for a lady’s boudoir, probably as a powder bowl cover or even for a powder puff.

AI & MANIUPLUATED DIGITAL ART

(From my personal digital image archives, year 2016)

In our late climbing, with the night almost done, to the so-called Mirador de Peñas Blancas, near the Hermitage of Hontanares (Riaza, Segovia, Spain) to enjoy a beautiful night of Perseids, without the disturbing of naive people, we had to cross this dark wooded path.

BEWARE OF DARKNESS, said the great George Harrison.

Because the ability to see is usually our primary sense, the absence of light displeases us, makes us nervous...

It even scares us.

It's a circumstance that writers, screenwriters or film directors have taken to let their imagination run and offer us cruel stories that, like endless nightmares, endanger our innocent dream.

The mere sight of this dark road, only illuminated by the car lights, leads us to imagine all sorts of weird stories.

CUIDADO CON LA OSCURIDAD (BEWARE OF DARKNESS), decía el gran George Harrison.

The title of this creation comes from a speech attributed to Chief Seattle in 1864. In fact the speech was written by screenwriter Ted Perry in 1972 for "Home" a film about ecology. The sentence popped up in my memory looking at this building in the Rotterdam port area (a school) from behind the memorial of slavery. I used elements of the building and the monument to create a reflection on the price millions of people paid to build to the wealth of the west .... and still do. Slavery may be officially abolished, but many forms of exploitation of men and land still exist.

The title also refers to an environment created by Belgian artist Camiel Van Breedam who, throughout his career, has been influenced and inspired by the fate of the native people in the americas.

"A kiss on the hand may feel very, very good, but a diamond and sapphire bracelet lasts forever" – Anita Loos (American actress, novelist, playwright and screenwriter).

I am a great fan of jewellery, especially if it contains either diamonds or sapphires – the latter being my birthstone – however for the theme for “Smile on Saturday” for the 16th of September (my actual birthday) of “bracelets and anklets” originally left me wondering what I could photograph. I have been given a great many pieces of jewellery for my birthday over the years: brooches, pins, necklaces, but I don’t have any anklets nor very many bracelets as I don’t wear them. In fact, I only have two bracelets in my possession. One is a very old and rare Vulcanite (early form of plastic) mourning bracelet which is extremely fragile considering it comes from the 1890s. The other is the bracelet which I used in this photograph. It was given to me on my birthday some years ago by my mother. It is a Hawaiian souvenir. Bought in the early years of the Twentieth Century it must have been a keepsake originally bought by someone quite wealthy, for the bracelet is made from hand made sterling silver links that are patterned with flowers on the reverse, and each one of these delicate blossoms is hand carved from shell before being affixed to each link with a sterling silver rivet. It is a dainty piece of jewellery, and one of the few American pieces I own. I hope that you like my choice for the theme this week, and that it makes you smile!

“Are you going to carry on like this all the way through the series?” Ali had already had enough of the grumbling monster at the other end of the sofa. “They're only using all of these locations to show off the county.” I tried to maintain my silence, but the red rag had been waved and I'd already climbed onto the highest horse in the neighbouring field and was chasing off after it like a hungry zealot. “But this couple live in Mevagissey, the others are so loaded that they've managed to build a multi million pound property at, isn't that Mawgan Porth, and yet they've bumped into each other by total coincidence at Penzance lido! Who goes to Penzance lido when they live at Mawgan Porth for goodness sake? It must be at least forty miles each way. There's a leisure centre at Newquay. We live much closer to Penzance and I've only ever been in that lido once. You've never been in it at all and you were born here! And why are they launching a charity in St Ives? It doesn't make sense!”

We were watching a new drama series on the television of course, and this one was set in our own backyard. Well, bits of it were anyway. Depends on your definition of backyard really. You might have seen it too. I expect the residents of Shetland feel the same and we've been hooked on that since the first series. Ali was right of course. Cornwall was the star of the show while the complex issues around a pair of babies who were accidentally swapped at birth because of an admin cock up were merely a side story. One rich couple, the other supposedly down on their luck - although she owned a restaurant, just as we all do down here, and they lived in a very nice looking house in Mevagissey that many local people can only dream of. But the reality gap is always going to drive people like me around the twist. Poldark was even worse. Holywell Bay one minute, Penberth Cove the next. And five minutes after that, Ross was racing his horse across Bodmin Moor while Demelza had magically appeared in Charlestown. And this was in the late eighteenth century, almost two hundred years before the first Ford Sierra Cosworth with go faster stripes had arrived on the peninsula for goodness sake.

I'm sure the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust really appreciated the negative fictional publicity. They're in the local news enough with tales of misfortune and malpractice as it is, without the screenwriters putting the boot in. I should add for the sake of balance that my children and their own children were all born there without incident.

I've often wondered when the moment would arrive for me to share this one, taken six years ago on a windy rain charged Sunday afternoon in March when the late winter light was doing magical things on top of St Agnes Head. But it was on a stout pinnacle by these very rocks that the villain broke his anger run along the cliff path and stood, gazing enigmatically towards the west as he plotted and schemed his devious affairs, one director's instruction short of beating his chest like a mountain gorilla. As the shot opened up and panned away into the distance, there was Wheal Coates, packed with glorious drama. But may I remind you that his waterfront palace is at Mawgan Porth? Down the hill from Newquay Airport. Did he run all the way then? Is he an ultramarathon man as well as a thoroughly unpleasant chap? If I fancy going for a trot I do it near home. I don't jump in the car and drive halfway across the county.

I'm sitting within this view as I sketch the notes for my story before I forget what I was going to rant about. There's nothing much doing anyway, and I've already got my shots, besides which I need to shift in a minute because it's Friday. Five a side night. It's a beautiful view, but rather than running halfway across the north coast of the county I came here in the car. It's much quicker and allows me to focus a bit more clearly than was done with the plot of a half baked TV drama that we only lasted the distance with because of where it was filmed. Enough said. Time to, erm, run around in a sports hall, and one just down the road rather than the other side of Cornwall.

For this shot I was inspired by Stanley Kubrick, a film director, screenwriter and producer who loved the so called one-point perspective, where lines converge into the center of the screen. Kubrick used the one-point perspective in many of his films (video clip).

His first film was Citizen Kane (1941), which is consistently ranked as one of the greatest films ever made, and which he co-wrote, produced, directed and starred in as Charles Foster Kane.

His distinctive directorial style featured layered and nonlinear narrative forms, uses of lighting such as chiaroscuro, unusual camera angles, sound techniques borrowed from radio, deep focus shots and long takes. He has been praised as "the ultimate auteur".

In the background the city of Fréjus a commune in the Var department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southeastern France. It neighbours Saint-Raphaël, effectively forming one urban agglomeration. The north of the commune forms part of the Massif de l'Esterel.

The origins of Frejus probably lie with the Celto-Ligurian people who settled around the natural harbour of Aegytna. The remains of a defensive wall are still visible on Mont Auriasque and Cap Capelin. The Phocaeans of Marseille later established an outpost on the site.

The exact date of the founding of Forum Julii is uncertain, but it was certainly before 43 BC since it appears in the correspondence between Plancus and Cicero and 49 BC is most likely.

St. Paul the Apostle is a very revered saint in the Sicilian town of Palazzolo Acreide, the feast in his honor is celebrated on two occasions (very important periods if referring to peasant civilization), on 29 June (the day I took this photo story this year 2025) date of his martyrdom, and January 25, the date of his conversion to Christianity. The "summer party" of June 29, begins with a particular collection of donut-shaped bread (in Sicilian called "cuddura"), donated by the villagers and collected on a cart, this is the "round of bread", these loaves (called "di San Paolo") have decorations that recall snakes: the reference is always to San Paolo, considered the protector from the poisonous bites of vipers, this is the ancestral legacy of an ancient peasant civilization, the wheat harvest period that coincides with the feast, it makes working in sunburnt fields particularly dangerous; once there were characters to whom supernatural gifts were attributed, they were called "ciarauli", capable of protecting from the venomous bites of the viper (This year, a very nice man of Palazzolo Acreide, who was also present last year, was present at the feast to recall these ancient figures. Instead of little snakes, as was once the custom, he had with him a very calm python, also because it was full). The procession takes the name of "sciuta", with reference to the "exit" from the basilica of San Paolo of two floats, first the float comes out with the relic of the saint, carried on the shoulders by the devotees, immediately after, at 13.00 o'clock the exit of the float takes place with the ancient statue of Saint Paul holding a sword in his hand (the iconography represents him with the sword for two reasons, he was beheaded with a sword stroke, and because he, referring to the word of God, defined it more effective and sharper than a double-bladed sword), at this point they begin among the most spectacular and evocative pyrotechnic games that I have ever seen, we witness a phantasmagoric and kaleidoscopic explosion of colors made with enormous colored confetti and with colored ribbons about two meters long called 'nzareddi, which recall the shape and movement of snakes. During the procession we witness the rite of children who, often completely naked, are taken by their parents by the expert hands of two devotees present on the float, they are thus placed in front of St. Paul to ask for his intercession and protection, sometimes these children are adorned with paper money, in fact, the donation of money is part of the rites that accompany the procession. Among these rites is the vow of the "bare shoulder" made by devout bearers, and that of women who walk barefoot by vow. The procession with the two floats then arrives, as a sign of devotion, in the church of the Annunziata.

Ruth Gordon, award winning American actress (Harold and Maude, Rosemary’s Baby), screenwriter, and playwright was born in Quincy, MA in 1896. She moved from Quincy shortly after graduating Quincy High School in 1914. But over the years she maintained friendships with childhood friends and classmates, often returning to Quincy for class reunions. In November, 1984 Ruth Gordon returned to Quincy when the city dedicated this Amphitheater in her honor, located in Merrymount Park. I went over to the park taking this shot after a recent snowfall.

Margarita: "I arrived in Israel in November 2022, but I started the process of repatriation back in 2015. I grew up in two houses, in Moscow, and in Sevastopol, I perceived the capture of Crimea as a personal tragedy, unbearable and irreversible, and began to collect documents. But in 2020 When my son and I finally passed the consular check, he said that he wanted to stay in Russia, and I decided that I would leave after he entered the institute. So, in fact, it happened. But, of course, the war became the decisive factor.

I moved alone. Probably, it is both more difficult and easier than with a family. It’s easier because you understand that alone you will somehow turn around. It is more difficult because there is no one to share the shock with. Fortunately, there were many kindred spirits around. Some of my friends got into this aliyah, I have found many new friends here.

After seven months, I can state that I felt some ground under my feet. I'm starting to teach writing skills and lead a literary circle for Russian-speaking teenagers.

I am a screenwriter. I write scripts for detective series. And now in the process of finishing the novel, also a detective story.

I connect my future with Israel, this is a country where it is comfortable, and there are so many kind and bright people around. I feel like I'm back home."

I had read the Diary as a child. This transposition as a graphic novel gave me the opportunity to reread it. I believe that Ari Folman, screenwriter, and David Polonsky, illustrator, did an excellent job and honored Anne's memory and the wishes of her father Otto who founded the Anne Frank Fonds in Basel after the war.

"At this point I would like, on my part and David Polonsky's, to ask for forgiveness if we had wronged the original diary by interpreting it too much", writes Ari Folman in the final note. In my opinion, I repeat, no wrong has been done and the younger generations who read this illustrated transposition will be able to get to know Anne and continue to spread the message of peace, goodness and beauty that Anne entrusted to her Kitty, her diary of 'Secret Accommodation.

The message of a barely adolescent girl, towards the world of adults who have lost all wisdom (and still continue to wage war, arm themselves, destroy life).

Antonio Griffo Focas Flavio Angelo Ducas Comneno Porfirogenito Gagliardi de Curtis di Bisanzio (15 February 1898 – 15 April 1967), best known by his stage name Totò, or simply as Antonio de Curtis, and nicknamed il Principe della risata ("the Prince of laughter"), was an Italian actor, comedian, screenwriter, dramatist, poet, singer and lyricist. He was commonly referred to as one of the most popular Italian performers of all time. He is best known for his funny and sometimes cynical character as a comedian in theatre and then in many successful films shot from the 1940s to the 1960s, but he also worked with many iconic Italian film directors in dramatic/poetic roles.

While he first gained his popularity as a comic actor, his dramatic roles, poetry, and songs are all deemed to be outstanding; in 2007, writer and philosopher Umberto Eco commented on the importance of Totò in Italian culture, saying that "in this globalized world where it seems that everyone sees the same movies and eats the same food, there are still unbridgeable divisions between cultures. How can two peoples ever come to understand each other when one of them is ignorant of Totò?"

In 1946, when the Consulta Araldica—the body that advised the Kingdom of Italy on matters of nobility—ceased operations, the Tribunal of Naples recognized his numerous titles, so his complete name was changed from Antonio Clemente to Antonio Griffo Focas Flavio Ducas Komnenos Gagliardi de Curtis of Byzantium, His Imperial Highness, Palatine Count, Knight of the Holy Roman Empire, Exarch of Ravenna, Duke of Macedonia and Illyria, Prince of Constantinople, Cilicia, Thessaly, Pontus, Moldavia, Dardania, Peloponnesus, Count of Cyprus and Epirus, Count and Duke of Drivasto and Durazzo. For someone born and raised in one of the poorest Neapolitan neighbourhoods, this must have been quite an achievement, but in claiming the titles (at the time they had become meaningless) the comedian also mocked them for their intrinsic worthlessness. In fact, when he was not using his stage name Totò, he mostly referred to himself simply as Antonio de Curtis.

Mario Monicelli, who directed some of the most appreciated of Totò's movies, described his artistic value, saying: "With Totò, we got it all wrong. He was a genius, not just a grandiose actor. And we constrained him, reduced him, forced him into a common human being, and thus clipped his wings."
