i will refrain
and i'll keep on running this neverending race
This is a re-edit of a photo I recently uploaded. It actually is more of a crop than an edit. I think it actually works now.
Lately I've come running up against my own wall again and again. It's someplace in my mind that I want to let go and I just can't seem to bring myself to shove it all the way out. And this got me thinking about how often we are our own worst enemies in that we have things in our lives we want to change desperately, and we HAVE the tools to do it... yet, day after day and sometimes year after year we refrain. I know for me it's because change is scary. The devil you know is still the devil in some way, right?
While wandering around the levee one day (because for some reason I've recently become obsessed with its winding mounds - they seem magical) I found this amazing tree. And I can't tell you how excited I am to go back and climb in its branches and play some more.

This week's theme was: H is for Hairdresser.
I haven't actually been a hairdresser for decades. I always wore my hair long and even now it doesn't grow so well, it's a long bob. I just trim the ends myself, so I suppose I'm my own hairdresser. :-)
Why is it we call a single, a pair, in the case of scissors? When I was a kid, we had one pair of scissors, and with seven kids, that really seems like not enough.... but we always knew to return them to the basket by the phone in the dining room. Funny the memories a challenge can bring back. ODC: pair
I spotted those hung on the rusty nail in an abandoned cottage on Flotta, one of Orkney's islands. How long could they have been there for?

Although there is no archaeological evidence, the earliest known "scissors" are attributed to the Mesopotamian period 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. These early scissors were more like shears and consisted of a single U-shaped piece used to cut the skins and hair of animals in a rudimentary way.

The earliest known scissors appeared in Mesopotamia 3,000 to 4,000 years ago.
These were of the 'spring scissor' type comprising two bronze blades connected at the handles by a thin, flexible strip of curved bronze which served to hold the blades in alignment, to allow them to be squeezed together, and to pull them apart when released.
Spring scissors continued to be used in Europe until the 16th century.
However, pivoted scissors of bronze or iron, in which the blades were pivoted at a point between the tips and the handles, the direct ancestor of modern scissors, were invented by the Romans around 100 AD.
They entered common use in not only ancient Rome, but also China, Japan, and Korea, and the idea is still used in almost all modern scissors.

I chose to display various sewing things as a still life. The large scissors & pinking shears belonged to my mum. I added small items including button thread & metal press studs. My mum didn’t enjoy sewing, but did any necessary sewing tasks & had the patience to teach me some sewing skills. She even taught me to use her (manual) sewing machine when I was very young. I always enjoyed sewing thanks to her encouragement, so it’s lovely that I still have these items.
... on orange cardstock.
I didn't have much hope for this shot, actually. Rather pleased with how it turned out.
