Today, Monday 19.04.2010, is the most important holiday, the so called "Sechseläuten" (or "Sächsilüüte" in Swiss German) in the city of Zurich. And this chap in the picture is what it's all about. The "Böögg", a snowman symbolising Winter is burned on a stake. The stake is set on fire at 6 o'clock, while the various guilds, one after the other, ride around it on horses to the music of the Sechseläuten march. The head of the snowman is filled with explosives and the time is stopped, starting at 6 o'clock, until the biggest of the explosives explodes, blowing away the snowman's head. Depending on how long it takes, a prediction is made as to how good or bad the summer's going to be. The longer it takes, the worse the following summer. Everything under ten minutes is good, everything more than that is bad.
On Sunday, the children's parade is taking place, on Monday, it's the guilds' parade, going to the city to the "Sechseläutenwiese", a place next to the lake, where the snowman is burned.
A colleague of mine (who's not Swiss) once told me that one probably has to be from Zurich to fully appreciate it. She may be right - as a native "Zürcherin", my hearts beats just a little bit faster when I hear the meloday of the "Sechseläuten march" and I just love the whole thing :-)
