Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city that was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe, which existed from 1100 to 1450 AD during the country’s Late Iron Age. The monument, which first began to be constructed in the 11th century and which continued to be built until the 14th century, spanned an area of 722 hectares (1,784 acres) and at its peak could have housed up to 18,000 people. Great Zimbabwe acted as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch and would have been used as the seat of their political power. (Source: Wikipedia)

Yacht Keramos and our friends from Yacht Summer Run sailed from Ilha Itaparica in the Bahia de Todos os Santos up the Rio Paraguaçu to the tiny village of São Francisco do Paraguaçu across the river from the Convento do Paraguaçu. A small child, surprised at our sudden appearance, asked, "Where are you from"? I answered San Francisco da California---She responded with a child's innocence, "You mean there is another São Francisco?"

As late day light illuminated Nandalanda Peak, 2,592 meters, I passed through a stand of Mulanje Cypress, a rare species of Widdringtonia native to Malawi, endemic to the Mulanje Massif on my descent towards Thuchila Hut shelter. It was an arduous but straightforward climb, the first of many Mt. Mulanje peaks that I was to climb in the several weeks to come.

The initial climb up the side of Chilemba Peak, 2,359 meters, one of a dozen granite peaks in the enormous Mulanje massif, was pretty tough--about 1,500m vertical climb carrying 30-40kg supplies. My destination was Lichenya Hut, a tough ascent which took almost 8 hours with my backpack ladened with a week's supplies. The rewards were the incredible vistas and solitude of this awesome mountain.
