The Eastman Kodak Studio Scale. I refinished the wood with shellac to be period appropriate using real shellac flakes and alcohol. The weights were perfect per my digital scale.
Well, here's a first look at the ICG Yard on my HO Dixon, IL, layout. No scenery yet, but some of the major structures set in place. And, yes, the track is nailed directly to the plywood with no cork/foam roadbed underneath since the ICG yard perpetually looked like it was sinking into the mud and weeds. Tracks (from left to right), lead to the town track, the ICG coop track, house track, middle track, main, Mor-Milk spur.
In light of the growing food and energy demands in Africa, the private sector is rallying to participate in the green growth agenda and align with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), targeting a low carbon transition. Various studies estimate the implementation of NDCs and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will require trillions of dollars by 2030, and many of these projections confirm the private sector will cover a significant portion of this climate investment. The post Covid-19 recovery is still underway, with impacts from the pandemic still being faced by the financial sector and economy at large. In this context, climate-smart investments bring both opportunities and challenges for job creation, inclusion, improving livelihoods, and economic growth. There are multiple climate finance funds and a growing set of climate finance instruments, but the major challenge for the African private sector continues to be access to affordable capital.
This panel, organised by BANK OF AFRICA, highlighted the priority pathways and business models in support of NDCs in Africa, from the perspective of various stakeholders in the private sector. The event aimed to generate a solution-oriented discussion around the gaps and opportunities of sustainable finance in the African context. BANK OF AFRICA Group, a pan-African universal banking group, has established itself as a regional sustainable finance pioneer over the past 15 years, developing various blended finance offers for energy efficiency, water, and waste management in partnership with DFIs, as well as a Green Bond and a Socially Responsible Fund (SRI). BANK OF AFRICA is piloting the Positive Impact Finance initiative methodology heralded by UNEP FI and is a member of the Coordination Group of the Climate Action in Financial Institutions initiative. BANK OF AFRICA’s continuous ambition is to offer innovative financing solutions to challenges faced by the private sector in Africa, especially SMEs, including climate and gender finance.
One thing that is recommended to do before releasing hand-reared monarch butterflies is to test them for the parasite Ophryocystis elektroscirrha (OE for short). This is a protozoan organism that infects monarchs and a few other butterflies and severely reduces their chances of survival. It is passed from the female to the larva via spores sticking to the egg shell (which the larva will eat once it hatches). It can be especially detrimental if infected butterflies make it to wintering sites where so many of them are congregated in a small space, facilitating the spread of diseases.
Testing for OE involves taking a small piece of sticky tape and gently touching it against the butterfly's abdomen. Detailed instructions and videos can be found on the internet. This removes a few scales, but if done gently it does not harm the butterfly. When observed under a microscope, OE would be visible as small, dark spores sticking to the scales. In this case, all you can see is butterfly scales and no spores at all, so my little prince is perfectly clean and healthy and ready to go!
Breakout Session: Scaling Impact Enterprises
Creating energy from landfills, connecting women-led coffee cooperatives with international buyers, verifying medications by mobile phone. The audacious ideas of social entrepreneurs can change the world, but critical barriers often inhibit these ideas from getting off the ground. While social entrepreneurs confront challenges typical for most entrepreneurs—such as access to capital, markets, and talent—by virtue of their business model they face added obstacles. Already expected to deliver on ambitious social and environmental returns in addition to financial returns, they also contend with greater institutional investor skepticism and appeasing a wider array of stakeholders. Social enterprises have nonetheless experienced significant growth, with traditional and impact investors committing more than $10 billion to these companies over the last four years—tripling their investments.
In this session, successful social entrepreneurs from around the world will share challenges from their work, as well as opportunities they see to achieve greater impact by scaling impact enterprises. Leaders from the private, public, and civil society sectors will also discuss how CGI members can:
• Design innovative approaches for impact enterprise talent recruitment, development, and retention.
• Define, measure, and communicate the social and environmental impact of social enterprises.
• Incorporate impact enterprises into their supply chains.
• Scale programs that support women and minority-owned enterprises.

This is a series of models depicting a Husky MRAP with mounted mine detecting equipment. One model was produced in 1:10 scale. Three other models, more portable and easier to transport, were produced in 1:18 scale.
The model was developed in 3D software first and produced by rapid prototyping. In fact these models were 100% rapid prototyped, by SLA and SLS. The chassis, in particular, were designed with channels to accept metal reinforcement profiles, otherwise it would be too vulnerable.
As the 1:18 scale models are meant to be traveling models, they are accompanied by the custom transit cases.
The models were recognized for accuracy and high level of detailing. The large model was placed on permanent display at the client's office and the 1:18 scale models started their trade show tour.

Scaled Quail are game birds found in the New World, which have became rather rare due to habitat destruction and hunting.
This isn't the quail *I* grew up with...but a Texas variety.
This is a model of walk-in water tank, an exciting and innovative piece of mining equipment. The model is designed to be exhibited at trade shows and presentations. It's features include removable top, full interior, walk-in stairway and working stairway doors. All tall railings on the water tank's roof are folding down. This model is considered highly functional, as whatever elements articulate on the subject, they articulate on the model as well.
Like all our models this one was developed digitally in 3D (Solidworks). The model was fabricated out of styrene and acrylic, with selected pats and components being rapid prototyped, including direct metal deposit.
In order to transport the model we designed three sets of transit cases - one for short range ground transportation in heavy duty ATA transit case and two for air transportation (in brief and full configuration) in smaller and lighter luggage type transit cases.
Happy to have a new scale that seems to be working properly. Bad news is, it throws off my weight loss history. Husband agrees that this scale is probably more accurate and is about four pounds higher than the old one. So, yay for accuracy. But boo, for the appearance that I've gained weight.
Still sick. Sucks. Bad. Throat hurts less today. Chest hurts worse.
