Un des 4 sites de pèlerinage bouddhiste avec Lumbini (naissance de Buddha), Bodhgaya ( son "illumination"), Kuchinagar (sa mort). Après avoir atteint l'"Illumination", Buddha se rendit à Banaras (Varanasi) pour y enseigner. Il prononça son premier sermon à Sarnath dans un bosquet rempli de cerfs devant ses 5 premiers disciples. Il y prêcha les "4 Nobles Vérités" et organisa la Sangha. 60 moines furent envoyés vers différentes destinations pour y prêcher son enseignement.

Au III ème siècle av.JC, l'Empereur Ashoka renonçe à la violence et part en pèlerinage dans tous les lieux associés à Buddha. Il y érige des monuments (stupas) et de hauts piliers. Sarnath devient alors un des principaux lieux de pèlerinage.

Des monastères construits de l'époque Gupta (IV-VIème siècle) au XII ème siècle ont été mis à jour lors de fouilles.

The Deer Park in the Sarnath was forest and gifted by the king of Benares for the purpose where deer might wander unmolested. Sarnath originated from Saranganath known as the “Lord of the Deer”. Amidst the beautiful gardens and the relics of Buddhist monasteries and stupas, the deer park is a prominent tourist attraction in Sarnath.
