Went to Sarnath on Dec 11, 2008. Sarnath is less than 30k from Varnasi.. but road conditions and the crowd make it a ardous journey.

 

Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first preached to 5 of his disciples..

 

Also, we saw a huge tomb built by King Asoka plus the excavations of a huge Monstary..

 

Overall a nice place to visit..

 

Didn't have time to visit a Govt run museum.. that's where the Ashoka Chakra.. emblem of India is kept..

The stupas were builded by Asoka the king of Magadha Kingdom of India; around 250 Buddhist Ara; in Isipatanamigadayavan ( Sarnath ) Varanasi, India.

Excursion à Sarnath-Le Parc des Gazelles

Sarnath est l’un des quatre sites sacrés principaux du bouddhisme

(source Magazine) : Une légende raconte qu’un bodhisattva en tant que daim, a offert sa vie à un roi en échange d’un lapin (« doe ») que le roi s’apprêtait à tuer. Le roi en fut si ému qu’il a créé un lieu de refuge pour les daims (Sarnath, « Seigneur des daims »), le parc est devenu un centre monastique, patronné comme centre bouddhiste durant le règne de l’empereur Asoka au 3ème siècle avant Jésus Christ. Le parc contient d’importantes ruines et la fondation d’un bâtiment rectangulaire où Asoka a médité. Il s’y trouve colonne avec les inscriptions concernant les édits de l’empereur. Il n’en reste qu’une colonne de pierre de sable de 5 mètres de haut, sur les 20 mètres de hauteur de ce monument. Un chemin pavé mène aux ruines du monastères et à un daim, à l’enceinte Nord.
