Wonderful pavement art from the Chytiria metal foundry - a manhole cover on Santorini one very hot June afternoon.

This Greek island really is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Here's a shot from a previous trip.

But you don't have to gaze into the Aegean from the crater's edge to see beauty; sometimes it can be literally under your feet. And this image of pouring molten metal is also quite apt given the island's volcanic origins.

A panorama of Santorini Greece from the highest point of the island at the Monastery of Profitis Ilias.

Incredible detail if you look at it original size.

The towns of Fira and Oia in the distance. Many blue domed churches and vineyards in view.

Santorini - population 13,000. Rumoured to be the tips of mountains on the lost continent of Atlantis.

Whatever it is, it’s extraordinarily beautiful. Crystal clear blue skies, black sand, towering cliffs and traditional blue and white Greek buildings balancing in and on the cliffsides.

The only place in Europe to be classified as having a desert climate - as you can see - the day we went it wasn’t particularly chilly.

Lots to see, visit and do. Not too crowded when we went, as there was only one small cruise ship visiting. It gets far more crowded when there are 2 or 3 large liners pulled up.

Incredible, panoramic views from ultra-cool tavernas and bars perched on the cliff face. Prices a bit more than elsewhere on the islands, but still surprisingly reasonable. Stopped at 2 bars for drinks and a taverna for lunch. All had stunning views and reasonable prices. I must admit though, I don’t mind paying a premium for views like these.

Santorini Greece is characterised by its picturesque white painted villages on the top of impressively high cliffs.

The main reason the inhabitants of Santorini were choosing areas so far away from the sea was the fear of the pirates.

A village in Santorini is very similar to all the villages in most of the islands of the Cyclades: small white-painted houses with blue doors and windows divided by narrow streets.

This kind of architecture can be explained by several reasons:

the small number of secure and easy to build on places, protection from the hard weather conditions (heavy hurricanes in winter and solar heat in summer), a shelter from the many pirates of the area, and also scarcity of construction material.
