Banner on what used to be a water feature in Library Square at Touchwood, Solihull.
Probably left over from Santa's Grotto, that was probably here back in December 2012.
I noticed that there is a cafe inside of Solihull Arts Complex opposite, so I had lunch there.

Think that this is a Santa's Grotto, in the room that formerly had the Staffordshire Hoard in it (until they moved it to another gallery).

Who can you trust these days? Poor trusting Santa has just nipped into the North Pole Hair salon for a quick tidy up before his annual Big Night Out. There is a big lesson to be learnt - be attentive- especially around artistic types intent on their own mischievous plan. Poor Santa!
The hairraising scene of Santa as it was designed and made by StudioM in Oct/Nov 2004 - photo taken in our home workshop in Tinbeerwah in the wee early hours. We assembled and secured his head so it was able to fall forward with its weight and then lift up slightly with a pull of a string attached to a cam on a rotating shaft above.
This scene was sold, AFTER this photo was taken, to a promotions company which has since exhibited it widely in Santa Grottos, department store windows and shopping centres, as well as promoting it on their web site. The company added an overhead rotating shaft and cam system that allows some simple up and down motion by string attachments - this is a commonly used method to animate such scenes to allow some very gentle up ad down motion. The scene has also been enjoyed in its present 'frozen in time' state by many who saw it in our studio. Any subsequent claims by the promotions company, its puppeteer director or any other involved in its display and exhibition, to be the creator, the mastermind' or 'creative force' behind the scene are COMPLETELY false, deliberately misleading and an infringement of our copyright which is maintained by RGM StudioM 2005. They had no influence whatsoever on the scene as seen in these photos and saw it for the first time as shown here, once it was delivered to their factory. Copyright retained by StudioM along with original sketches, working drawings and specifications.
StudioM commissioned a dollmaker, Juanita Wellings in Clifton QLD, to make the Santa head and hands to our drawings and specifications. She also made the elves and mice completely to our specifications and drawings. All original sketches, drawings and specifications retained by StudioM with copyright.
Christmas shopping for friends, Day 8. It would have been mothers 90th birthday so we went for a nice day out to celebrate the life and not the death of a Great & Beautiful Woman.
Found oursELVES inside one of mothers favourite garden centres. Oh it was like Santas Grotto and then (after being caught kissing another man by Fluffy when I thought he wasnt around with his camera) I caught him stroking another!!!!
Fluffys excuse was that he was having a bad attack of "Disney Spells"
Oh well..I am not really that jealous...although Fluffy doesnt stroke my ears like he is doing with Bambi!
Hope you are all getting into the Spirit of Christmas Dear Friends.........
I dont `do` Christmas but now Fluffy is in my life, Christmas `presence` has suddenly become magicakl and exciting! Bless him.

somewhere out there, a Santa's grotto designer is having a laugh (btw, I did look for the snake, but only found a ladder)
Santa's grotto at Matlock Bath's Gulliver's Kingdom was really good. Little Holly loved it, even if Santa himself was a little overwhelming! The christmas experience at Gulliver's Kingdom comes strongly recommended.
Lewis sits beside Santa with that look that says - "is this for real, Pops?" Yes, Lewis that is the real Santa ... "but where's Rudolph, Pops?"
Is this such a good idea? A close up of the sleeping, unsuspecting, snoring Santa as the elves give him a purple tipped mohawk. Not quite what he expected when he went into the North Pole Hairdressers shop for a qick trim and tidy up before his 'Big Night Out' gig.. He shouldn't have gone to sleep and trusted those elves. Some people just can't be trusted to do the right thing! Especially arty types intent on their own agenda.

...If you've been good this year...
Father Christmas giving out presents at the Twycross Zoo Christmas Grotto
Somewhat bizarrely given the Mediterranean climate part of the Popeye film set has been transformed into Santas Grotto, complete with anamatronic reindeer and elves making christmas presents (thats the elves, not the reindeer). Santa Claus was strangely absent, probably down on the beach sunning himself.
We made the seesaw so that it would move up and down easily if pulled by a string - its weight allowing it to drop in free fall. If this is done, the elves who have been secured to the seesaw are able to flop back and forth and look very animated with little effort. The plane looks as if it is moving around in the middle of the scene and if made to do this the elf who is secured at his bottom will move freely with it. The mouse above is in a cart which can be made to tip forward easily with its weight and then be pulled back again. Some of the toys that are spectating from above on the shelf, are secured so that they too can move easily with a tug on a string. The shelves are sloped slightly to allow for downlights and light wash effects from underneath.

AFTER this photo was taken, this scene was sold, without transfer of copyright, to a promotions company, which has since exhibited it widely in Santa Grottos and shopping centres. The company inserted an overhead rotating shaft with cams to collect the fishing lines and create some motion down below with the objects as suggested. This is a simple mechanism which is used widely by puppet animators, and for which the scene has been designed to accomodate. The scene has also been enjoyed in its static 'frozen animated' state by many visitors to our studio during its making. False claims by the promotions company and its puppeteer director to being 'the mastermind' and 'creative force' behind it are COMPLETELY false, misleading and an infringement of our copyright which is maintained by RGM StudioM 2005. They had no influence on or input into the scene as seen in these photos taken in our studio.
Juanita Wellings in Clifton QLD made elves and mice to our specifications and drawings. All original drawings, sketches and specifications of StudioM's scenes are retained by StudioM as the copyright holders.

Sleeping snoring Santa is getting a quick trim and set before flying high on his Big Night Out. It doesn't pay to go to sleep in the hairdresser's chair. It's a bit of a hairraising event. Just shows... you can't trust those slick, 'full of hot air' types, who are intent on their own agenda.
This scene was designed and made by RGM of Studio M at our home workshop in Tinbeerwah in the Noosa Hinterland.
AFTER this photo was taken the scene was sold to a promotions company ( without copyright transfer), which has since exhibited it widely in Santa Grottos, department store windows and shopping centres, as well as being featured on their home website without acknowledgements. Any claims by this company or its director to being 'the mastermind' and 'creative force' behind it are completely false, deliberately misleading and an infringement of copyright which is maintained by RGM StudioM 2005. The company had no influence or input to the scene as seen in these photos. The company supplied the basic, unpainted, steel frame that fitted with their standards, to which we secured the scene.
We especially commissioned Juanita Wellings, a dollmaker in Clifton, to make Santa's head and hands for the scene. She made them to our design, drawings, instructions/ specifications and did a great job.
Look at the photo called 'Santa's Dad' which shows my husband Peter with the Santa head and hands the day they arrived from Clifton.
The mice as seen in many of our scenes were made by her to our design and instructions. She also made the elves to meet our specified requirements.
The originals of all our sketches, drawings, instructions and specifications for this and all of the scenes we have made are retained by StudioM along with the copyrights.

Throughout December a section of Hyde Park near Hyde Park Corner is transformed into a Winter Wonderland, complete with fairground rides, giant wheel, circus, Christmas market, food and drink stalls, Santa's grotto and an ice rink.
An elfy day at the North Pole in Santa's toyshop where the toys are made. Plenty of movement possible from the toys on the shelves above as well as the puppets. If a simple rotating shaft with cams attached is placed across the top of the scene, fishing lines attached to the puppet/toys/mice/ seesaw/ hinged box and then connected back to the cams will produce some effective movement without much engineering. Use a small motor to rotate the shaft and you have an animated scene. Simple and easy .

Photo was taken at StudioM premises before the scene's sale to a promotions company which put in mechanism as described above to create some very simple up and down motion.

Santa's Grotto at Touchwood.
The newly revamped grotto in the central area at Touchwood in Solihull.
Polar bear at the front.
Stuffing teddy bears, testing seesaws, knitting, painting spots, sewing teddies, and being 'bear' headed are all in an elfy day's work. Many of the toys on shelves are able to move and return by a gentle pull on string from above which offers a lot of various movements and alows the scene to become quite lively if done well. The shelves are on a slope so that LED lighting can be installed underneath.

AFTER this photo was taken, this scene was sold...without copyright transfer.... to a Promotions and puppet company which put in some simple motion by means of fishing lines and a motorised overhead shaft and cam system. As promised some evening shots of the impressive "gardens of light" in Bournemouth Gardens for the Christmas period...due to slow internet (and after 2 days of no internet) I'm having to upload a couple of shots at a time. These are hand held shots so not 100% clear and I've not edited them much (or not at all in some cases) !!

Yes that looks right. The scene in StudioM's workshop during positioning of the elves and mice. The mouse has his feet secured but is not yet connected to his fishing line above to hold him in position. I put an eyelet into Santa's wrist and it is attached to the timber arm of the seat, so that the hand can be lifted up as shown here.

This scene was sold, AFTER this photo was taken, to a promotions company which has exhibited it widely in major department store windows, Santa Grottos and shopping centres. Completely FALSE claims by this company and its director to being the scene's creator,'the mastermind' and 'creative force' behind it are COMPLETELY FALSE, deliberately misleading and an infringement of our copyright which is maintained by RGM StudioM 2005. The company had absolutely no influence or input on the scene as it is seen in these photos and saw it for the first time when we delivered it to their premises, exactly as seen here.
Juanita Wellings in Clifton QLD made elves and mice to our specifications. StudioM also commissioned her to make Santa's head and hands to our design drawings and specifications.
