The augmented reality sandbox is an extremely interactive and tactile way to teach basic concepts in geology and geography in a really interesting way. Any time you can introduce interactive technology into your subject matter, your ability to engage your audience immediately increases. This has been evident with the Augmented Reality Sandbox on the 2nd Floor of the Chattanooga Public Library, having received over 600 visitors in under 2 weeks of being in the public eye.

While there’s lots of potential for hard-line curriculum to be developed around the sandbox, the real and unforeseen potential exists in what the kids themselves come up with. It’s already been used as a device for digital story telling, with kids using the sandbox and its shifting landscape as a platform to develop their own short stories, entirely of their own accord.

The Chattanooga Public Library's sandbox was built by Jake Brown (pictured center) , a 17-year old college sophomore working at the library as a technology projects coordinator. Jake used open source technology designed by specialist Peter Gold of the UC Davis Department of Geology.

Building lakes in the sandbox

Daddy built this for me!

The sandbox in grandmother Devon's backyard was a wooden packing crate filled with sand from the local lumber yard. I think that the young girl was one of the Andrews kids whose grandmother was a neighbor of the Devons. It was almost like the sea shore except that cats got into it sometimes. Oxford, Pa. 1952

One of the ladies as work has gone on maternity leave. So in her absence I have been in placed in charge of minding her Zen Garden.

Who else would be better to assist with guard duty, but the CPKF Rangers Zolo Platoon troopers, equipped with BrickArms?

I played in this sandbox day after day when I was a young child, around middle 1970s.

There had been an elephant-figured slide but no longer exists.

The diameter seems less than 3 meters. How small!

The Tortoise and the Hare, maybe.

Sydney loves to play in the sandbox.

This girls is far more advanced in her play than Jessie was at this age. I suppose that has to do with the fact that Sydney wants to play with whatever Jessie plays with. She's skipping over the age appropriate toys and playing with stuff that's age appropriate for Jessie.
