The Great Sand Dunes of Colorado is the tallest in the US.

We hiked to the highest peak called the Star Dune which is about 750ft. It was a difficult climb up. You will need to wear hiking shoes and take a bottle of water with you. If the sun doesn't hurt you the winds will definately try to stop you along the way to the top. I got a good exfoliation on my exposed body parts at the top where the winds were so strong I felt the sand scraping my skin. I also had to close my eyes to keep them from getting sand in them.
