And the drives stopped the vehicle at the very edge of the sandy cliff. We asked him what the point of such adventure, he said he is expert in this and always did like that. I am still in doubt of his statement; May be he also had lost in the vastness of the desert and just woke up at the edge of the cliff.
I learned a lot about this photographing this amazing place. The three most important factors are, 1. Lighting (sunrise or sunset obvious prime times) 2. Weather...who knew Death Valley could be anything but hot 3. Location...unless you are staying in the park, which is hard to do because there are few choices, everything is at least an hours drive and finally 4. Gear (I really wish I had a Sigma 10-22mm in my camera bag.)
I had none of these things going for me on this trip. I had 3 young children with me and we were staying in Pahrump about an hour away from the park, Getting them up for sunrise was just not going to happen. I thought we would aim for sunset, but there was a wind storm completely ruining my chances for that warm late afternoon light.
The most important thing I learned, I must come back and be better prepared next time.
They trekked up the sand dunes with us, in the pitch darkness of the morning. They sang us songs and danced.
