This high-volume air sampler is used to collect airborne radionuclides in the environment. The efficient device is used when samples must be collected quickly. It is an important tool in the radiation monitoring activities of Hanford’s emergency preparedness program as well as routine environmental surveillance.

Here are some sample details of some of my new work for an exhibit in Chicago next month. A lot of burlap, a lot of stitchery and of course a lot of painting. I will begin posting full images soon my flickr friends.

MWMO Water Resources Specialist Kari Oquist retrieves a buoy from the river. Hester-Dendy macroinvertebrate samplers are suspended in the water column below the buoy.
Workers sample a section of soil removed from a well site along the shoreline of the Columbia River at the Hanford Site. The sampling helps determine what contaminants are present at different depths in the soil.

CAVES 2011. Microbiological sampling: one of the rooms visited by the
astronauts gleams with gold. It's known as cave gold. No known
microbiological studies on this phenomena have been done until now. The German space agency DLR cooperated with ESA
during CAVES 2011 and has now started a DNA analysis of the samples collected by the astronauts.
ESA’s cave training prepares astronauts to work as an international team in
real exploration conditions. Sending astronauts underground to survive and
explore Sardinian caves in Italy for almost a week is just one element of
their long training.
The Sardinian caves are isolated from the outside world. The astronauts need
to get used to confined spaces, minimal privacy, technical challenges and
limited equipment and supplies for hygiene and comfort - just like in space.

Rendered in Honor of my friend Teri who wrote a wonderful story... it starts out like this....
"Sample 2207" by Teri
Each day, as she had for the last 9,875,213 days, her assignment was the same, “Tend, protect, and preserve specimen sample 2207.” She had no knowledge of where samples 1 to 2206 were located, or if they even existed. Similarly, she lacked any knowledge of samples 2208 or higher. Her entire databanks were filled with the knowledge needed to care for her sample....

Where did all the samples on Hello Nasty come from?
“There was one point when we were in the submarine crossing the Atlantic. We had a recording studio in the submarine. And there was a flock of whales that actually came by. And they were huge whales, actually some of the biggest whales in the world. And Adam went out in scuba gear with the boom mic, and actually caught some of the whales mating.” ~ Adam Yauch

I am sampling some silk and merino fiber for spinning. After spinning singles onto a bobbin in three different sections, I cut the three sections of singles apart and wound them tightly onto a plying ball. Then the yarn practically plies itself: let the singles twist back on themselves in a controlled way as I unwind the plying ball again.
This is a sample of a menu displayed to the show case of the restaurant.
Because this is made by plastic resin, cannot eat. ^^
