My wine is now 25 days old. Since I will be “racking” to a new carboy sometime tomorrow I decided to skim the fruit residue that was floating on top (now in the bowl), so I hopefully won't transfer much of the yeast/fruit sediment to the new jug.
I also tested the specific gravity and it shows about 0.990 on the hydrometer. So, now that fermentation is complete, it looks like the wine will have a 14.4% alcohol content.
The test sample here tasted okay, but you can definitely tell how young it is. This wine won't be anywhere near “good” or drinkable until it has aged for another 6-12 months.
Sample of altar cloth. Pricking from Svenska Spetstar 40/2 Bockens linen. this is the second sample, out of the same thread to be used on the main project. It enables church members to see what is going on, and helps the maker eliminate mistakes from the actual cloth edging. It has been boiled to check for shrinkage.

Really liking the wet juicy nib of this fountain pen for doodling and sketching. It doesn't skip and feels smooth from the get-go.Blog entry.
acque Hakizimanacollects a soil sample from a farmer’s field in Rwanda.
The soil sample is later analyzed in the laboratory to determine the soil nutrients levels including macro and micro nutrients, soil PH and organic matter content. This data is critical for understanding crop suitability, the spatial distribution of yield gaps and targeting agricultural investment. Overall the information integrated together with household and agricultural survey informs the tradeoffs and synergies between agricultural productivity ecosystem services and human well-being in Rwanda.

I am due to deliver a finished piece for exhibition on Saturday, and it isn't even started yet.
This is my first piece of panic sampling.
The theme is (of course) the suffragette, Emma Sproson, who was placed in solitary confinement in Stafford Gaol for her activities.
This confinement took place just after her "confinement" with child, and she was obliged to leave the baby with her husband as babies were not allowed in gaol in those days.
I imagine Emma yearning for her child and sitiching a cap for it for when she was released.
This small sample is worked on linen with crochet cotton and shows images of bars, crosses ( for kisses) and Italian knotted border stitch which appeared to me to look like nappy pins.
One of the pleasures of working a piece like this is that I get to research some unusual stitches.
Work in progress.

IAEA marine experts and Japanese scientists collect water samples in coastal waters near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Since the accident at the plant in March 2011, the Japanese authorities have been continually monitoring the levels of radioactivity in sea water and publishing the results. In an effort to verify the accuracy of these results and increase public confidence in what is being reported, the IAEA is undertaking joint sampling missions. The water samples were shared between the IAEA Environment Laboratories and Japanese laboratories. They will be analysed independently and the results will be compared to check the quality of the analyses and document the reliability of data.

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon Drilling Platform exploded and sank, causing an enormous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. U.S. Geological Survey field offices responded immediately by organizing teams to take pre-spill sediment and water samples in order to establish a baseline survey. This baseline will be used to determine the scope and impact of the oil spill. The samples will be stored in padded containers such as those pictured.
