Last night was one of the worst nights of my life. And of course Sam's too.
It may sound paranoid and silly and after-the-fact to say this, but I will anyway, if only to make myself feel a bit of relief; it really is worth it to try to enforce a 'no running in the house' rule if you don't already!
We maybe got too relaxed about it I think. Sam and Kale were playing and chasing and when Sam stopped in the doorway, Kale didn't, but ran into the back of him, sending him head first into the sharp door frame.
It was one of the most traumatic experiences I've had as a mother. Head injuries are not nice. We spent four hours in emergency, ending with a drugged up Sam and nine verticle stitches up his forehead and big horrid dressings which he ripped off as soon as he woke up this morning.. I haven't slept since it happened because I've been too worried about him.
He'll be scarred for life physically, and I think I will for at least a long time, emotionally.
It's hell seeing your baby in pain and having no control to make it stop, or undo what happened. Maybe it's just one of those things, and can't be helped with children, but right now I feel very guilty about 'letting it happen'. I was only a few feet away!
Just don't let your kids run in the house! They have that rule in child care centers, and schools etc. but we managed to overlook it. Poor Sammy...

I wasn't sure which picture to put up as my last post for 2013 but this seemed appropriate. It was a big year for us in many ways, including celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and also the birth of our wonderful grandson Sam. It has also been a good year photographically as although I don't actively market my pictures, various people seem to have found me and bought pictures, including brochures, magazines, books and one that is regularly featured on National TV.
It hasn't been such a good year for Flickr though as my contacts seem to have been decimated following the various changes to the site which have caused a wholesale migration to other photo sites. It does seem to me that there is a significant changing emphasis on Flickr - I wonder what 2014 will bring!

A little late but I wanted to post this triptych showing an annual tradition on the Fourth of July on Lake Cavanaugh in Mount Vernon Washington. This is actually the 2nd generation to continue the tradition. The current Sam's father started the tradition decades ago. He skis around the entire lake while other people follow in their boats the entire way. How cool is it that even though the originator physically can't do it anymore, his son carries it on.
