We went on a tour of Hot Springs Cove on Vancouver Island, and these dogs from the native village across the water would swim across the cove each day to suck up to the tourists for attention and food. I fell in love with this guy, and had the hardest time getting on the boat without him. I named him Sam.

Sam is unable to control his giddiness around our neighbor's daughter, Mikenzie. They adore each other. Sadly, they're moving out of state today. Sammy's first heartbreak.

In exploration of the anneALgo, which is becoming an ideal test sketch and algorithm for SAM to test drive.
SAM managed to draw two iterations of this image; one was the single line procedure, the other using pointillisme. This is basically calculating distances between points and deciding on whether to draw to or move to that new point. The anneAlgo does have a rather old school 1960's aesthetic to it. We like it.
SAM however is suffering from mechanical problems, especially with his hand. We need to get to the drawing board on that one and make a better piece. In the meantime we are pushing on with software experiments so we can have at least a decent robust little program for SAM and future developments.

The boy is a much less willing subject than his sister. He is also a wriggler, so it was necessary to use a head brace, with the result that he looks distinctly uncomfortable. Worse still, he demands payment and this rather unsatisfactory plate cost me one pound sterling. Sigh.
Clear glass full plate ambrotype, taken with a 8.5" Petzval lens wide open, 4 seconds in dull shade.

I hope you don't mind, but I still have a few photos of Sam that I haven't shared on Flickr yet. For those of you who don't know, we had to put him to sleep after 14 years (he may have been 16 years old, as we were told he was about 2 when we rescued him)
As you can see he wasn't looking quite so good by this stage - his front half was fine, but the back half he had been nibbling at as he'd had a bad case of fleas.
We are surviving without him, but there isn't a day I don't think about him, and I still find it hard to break some of the old habits!
