riye'nin en büyük ve en merkezi kapalıçarşısı olan Hamidiye Çarşısı, eski Şam şehrinin surları içinde, Şam Kalesi’nin yanında bulunmaktadır. Tavra Caddesi'nden başlayan bu kapalıçarşı, Emevi Camisi’nin batı kapısına çıkan meydanda bitmektedir. Dünyanın en eski, en büyük ya da en ünlü çarşısı olmasa da, Hamidiye Çarşısı en heyecan verici ve canlı alışveriş alanlarından birisidir. Çarşının sokakları eski Şam şehrinin içinde dolaşırken, kubbesi altındaki dar ve sınırlı alanda yarattığı hareket ve canlılık gerçekten görülmeye değerdir.
Hamidiye Çarşısı'nda 18. yüzyılın sonunda yapılan dükkanların her biri diğerinden uzun sütunlarla ayrılmaktadır. Alışveriş yapmak, yürümek, vitrin gezmek için çok güzel bir yerdir. Çarşıda halkın günlük ihtiyaçlarını karşılamaya yönelik pek çok mağazanın yanında şehri ziyarete gelenlerin yanlarında hatıra olarak götürecekleri pek çok yiyecek, içecek ve eşyayı da bulmanız mümkün. Bunların başında elbette ipek, gümüş, baharat ve dimaşk adıyla bilinen ve çift tarafı da nakışlı kumaş gelmekte.
Çarşının üzeri 19. yüzyılın sonlarında kapatılmış. Oluklu demirden oluşan kubbesindeki deliklerin, 1925 yılındaki ulusal direniş hareketine Fransız uçaklarının makineli tüfeklerinden çıkan kurşun delikleri olduğu söylenmektedir. Sokakları Roma döneminden kalsa da şimdiki iki katlı mağazaların, kubbesinin ve geniş sokaklarının 19. yüzyılda gerçekleştirildiği biliniyor. O dönemde şehri ve çarşıyı ziyaret eden Osmanlı Padişahı II. Aldülhamit'in şerefine çarşının adının bu şekilde değiştirildiği de bilinen ayrı bir gerçek.
2002 yılında yapılan geniş kapsamlı bir restorasyon sonucunda, çarşı 19. yüzyıl dönemindeki haline benzer bir duruma getirilmiş.

I hope you don't mind, but I still have a few photos of Sam that I haven't shared on Flickr yet. For those of you who don't know, we had to put him to sleep after 14 years (he may have been 16 years old, as we were told he was about 2 when we rescued him)
As you can see he wasn't looking quite so good by this stage - his front half was fine, but the back half he had been nibbling at as he'd had a bad case of fleas.
We are surviving without him, but there isn't a day I don't think about him, and I still find it hard to break some of the old habits!

Wondering the streets of Cambridge with Sam, trying to find some kind of inspiration for the flyer designs we're making for Fez.
I was at a homeschooling conference with my daughter, manning a booth for her high school. It wasn't easy getting people to come talk to us, partly because the last thing a homeschooling parent wants to do is send his or her kid off to boarding school, and partly because we were no match for the shiny books, games, and tall ship hats at the other booths. So I wandered over to talk to the people at the tall ship hat booth.
The lovely woman beneath the tall ship hat is Sam. She's a co-founder of the Suitcase Shakespeare Company, a theater group whose mission is "to kindle a new and passionate fire for Shakespeare's stories through dynamic physical connections" (and, I guess, crazy hats). Sam and her fellow thespians were enthusiastic about their mission and delightful to talk to, peppering the conversation with Shakespearean in-jokes and ideas for how to excite a new generation about Shakespeare. In repertory at the moment they have Romeo and Juliet, in period costumes and commedia dell'arte masks, and Pyramus and Thisby, which they acknowledged is not full Shakespeare play but a shorter one based on the rude mechanicals in Midsummer Night's Dream.
The hat Sam is wearing is part of a pair, the second being a shipwreck hat. These were part of the prologue to Twelfth Night a few years ago, but this one is useful in getting people over to the booth as well. I'm already thinking of attention-grabbing hats we could construct for my daughter's school.

I took this portrait at a friend of mine's wedding. This was later on in the night and I dont really remember taking it but I think it is one of the most natural portraits I have managed to capture.
It is a little grainy as I shot it at about 640 ISO but I am still chuffed with it.
This is one of my girlfriend's best friends, Sam.
