"100 Strangers" (11/100)
“Hey! Whatcha taking pictures of?” The voice came from a parked car and was not exactly friendly. Sigh, the bane of my street photography life. I started to ignore it, but decided, no… I’ll just tell him.
“I’m shooting pictures of the trash.” (Yep, I was.)
“What do you want to do that for?”
“Well, I like the way it looks.”
“You like the way trash looks?” the voice was incredulous, but interested.
“Yes, I like the way it looks.” And I started to walk on.
“Hey, come here.” And a young face showed itself from the automobile’s dim interior.
“Bad idea” I think to myself, but do, leaning over to meet his gaze.
“Why don’t you take a picture of me?”
Well… why not? And so began my encounter with a delightful, energetic and warm young man named Sam. He is an aspiring rapper and gave me a short sample of his music. Not bad, really and his whole attitude was so beautifully infectious that I couldn’t help catching the upbeat mood.
“So, how ‘bout my picture?”
Naturally, I had to get the trash in the background as Sam knelt down and struck a perfect pose. We traded contacts and I hope Sam enjoyed his photograph as much as I did my unexpected encounter with Stranger number eleven in my series.
This picture is #11 in my 100 Strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page
Sam the Record Man is a Canadian record store chain that, at one time, was Canada's largest music recording retailer, with 130 stores. The Internet age, the competition with the powerful HMV (HMV stores lowering prices in stores near Sam the Record Man locations) and other factors, forced the chain into bankruptcy on October 30, 2001, although its flagship location remained in business until 2007.

Last year Sam was diagnosed with a heart murmur and with a change of diet and some behaviour modifications he has done fine. A few weeks ago we noticed his stamina had dropped and he seemed to be tired more than usual. I took him to the vet last week and it turns out he now has an arrhythmia. Tomorrow morning he goes in for X-rays, an ultrasound and bloodwork. He is only nine which isn't too old for a dog his size. We can't imagine life without our sweet little guy. I'll keep you apprised and we hope for the best.
Feeling a bit playful this morning. A local pub has been closed for a couple of years and of course the vandals have moved in. It's mostly boarded up but I noticed yesterday that some of the boards had been torn away, so decided to take the opportunity to pop in and get some pix. I'd love to do a proper photoshoot like this in an old factory.
Just as they were about to leave, the one musician makes his way over to Frank and introduces himself. "Hi, I'm Kiester. I play the keytar. That's why they call me 'Kiester."
"How do you do," Sam and Konoto said together.
"I heard you talking about the costumes and all, and wondered about good ol' Nosmo. He's done some great work, hasn't he? You've seen some of his designs, haven't you?"
"Yes, we have," Sam replied, slightly wondering where this conversation was going.
"Oh, I also know that there is that magician lady who can be a real pill."
"Do you happen to know her name?" Konoto jumped in, hoping that Kiester my be able to supply one.
"Nah, sorry I don't know her real name, but her 'stage name' is 'Reverso, the Rodeo Robin'. She does card tricks with the kids and switches the cards somehow. She's fun to watch." Keister explained he had seen Reverso in action on stage a few weeks ago and was amazed at her sleight of hand tricks.
"Great!" Sam exclaimed. I need to head back to my office right away. I've got a hunch on something. Are you coming, Konoto?"
