I haven't been to this popular location before so I didn't really know what to expect, it was a proper winters day, cold with strong winds thankfully nice and bright though. It seemed quite a long walk from the car park I would guess at 3 miles each way, but definitely well worth the effort. I plan to go back to this location when the heather is in colour.
The Millstone Grit forms the edge of the high peat moorland plateau on the eastern side of the valley above Ladybower Reservoir, the edges being the last remains of the gritstone which originally covered all of the Peak District, most of which was scraped off by glaciers in the last ice age.
The Edge itself is notable for its unusual gritstone tors and its views of the Derwent Valley and the Dark Peak landscape; these features along with its proximity to Sheffield have made it a popular venue for walkers. Its popularity has led to substantial path erosion and the most affected parts of the edge between The Salt Cellar and Lost Lad Hillend have been paved with natural stone slabs to reduce further damage as part of the Lottery Paths Project.
Derwent Edge has several examples of unusually shaped gritstone tors that have been formed by the actions of wind, rain, and frost over many centuries. These tors have been named over the years by local residents and have now been officially titled on Ordnance Survey maps. These include the Cakes of Bread, the Coach and Horses, and the Salt Cellar. The Coach and Horses (also known as the Wheel Stones and thus named on Ordnance Survey maps) resemble a coach and horses on the horizon when viewed from the A57 road to the south. Lost Lad Hillend is worth visiting as it has a stone-built topographic indicator to aid in identifying landmarks in the extensive view.

The Assembly Hall is a Victorian Gothic congregation hall. Rough granite walls are laid out in cruciform style making the hall's exterior look like a small gothic cathedral.
The three Grade II listed calcining kilns at the Fountain Street Works in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent are named Salt, Pepper and Vinegar on account of their analogous shapes. They were built in 1900 by William Baker & Co. replacing other calcining kilns which had been in operation since 1839. The site was acquired by James Kent & Co in 1909 to supply quartz and ox bone powders for their bone china production at nearby Old Foley works. The kilns were loaded with layers of flint and coke and then fired for 3 days at a temperature of 1400°C to render it friable. After a further two days of cooling the contents of the kilns were then unloaded and sieved to remove the coke and residue before being transferred to the grinding pans. The flint was ground by large millstones to a very fine powder to be added to the clay mix and give strength in the production of stoneware or white-ware. Ox bone would be fired at a lower temperature of 850°C before being ground and further added at a ratio of 10% to the clay mix in the production of bone china, and 30% for fine bone china. James Kent started his pottery business in 1897 at the Old Foley works and the firm continued in family ownership until 1981 when both sites were bought by Bayer (UK) Ltd. In 1985 the business was sold once again and then went through a succession of ownerships until 2003 when it was bought by the current private shareholders. The Old Foley works was bulldozed in 2006 but the James Kent Group continues today at the Fountain Street works manufacturing materials for the ceramics industry such as refractory elements, silicates, zirconium, frits for glazes and china clay. Romantic sunset in Trapani, Sicily. The sun just disappeared behind the islands of Levanzo, Favignana and Marettimo.
Evening light hits the side of Derwent Edge, with Dovestone Tor in the distance beyond the "Salt Cellar". I loved the streaky Cirrus clouds behind the rock pedestal, which seemed to highlight this distinctive rock outcrop nicely.
The light remained pretty good late on and we got a good sunset, which was a treat, particularly for the two Flickr pals Pete and Ade who were both recuperating their fell fitness.
Wide-angle view of the salt flats in Badwater Basin. Haze from a 127F heat wave hides the Panamint mountains in the distance, but a salmon pink sky just picks out the ridge line.
This is my first attempt at Salt Printmaking.
The negative is FP4 processed in Pyrocat HD.
The paper used: Canson Universal Sketch pad.
The paper was salted with Ammonium chloride in Knox gelatin. Both the salted gelatin and the Silver nitrate were painted on using foam brushes from the local hardware, brushing both horizontally and vertically. The salted gelatin was applied twice, allowing it to dry between coats.
The print was gold toned for 10 minutes before fixing, and waxed after it was washed and dried.
I found this salt & pepper shaker at an antique store. I liked how creepy they are.

One of many of saltwater Sussex's salt marsh ponds. People rarely get to see them and enjoy them. They are quite beautiful, but unfortunately difficult to access, i.e. soft mud and plenty of insects. 2023 July 13 Great Marsh - Lewes
I have embarked on creating a video of the various creeks and shorelines in the Lewes area from the air. What a job that turns out to be. You have to plan the video, the flights, and work with the weather. With single picture, you can bracket, take all kinds of different angles, come back, pick the best, develop it, and done. When a video isn't quite right, you have to fly again and redo the video, often several times. And that's just one segment of many. Then you've got to edit all the segments, add music, natural sounds, etc. It's never done it seems. Well, it's coming soon. One more flight or two and some more edits... Think I'll go back to taking stills. Lot less work!

Badwater Basin, Death Valley, California
A view across the salt pan towards the Panamint Mountains during the last light of sunset. These views are usually photographed with a very wide angle lens that emphasizes the closest salt polygons and diminishes the distant mountains. Here I’m using an almost normal lens length, mimicking the perspective of someone standing on the salt pan.

A few nights ago I joined the rest of the planet and went on an Aurora hunt. The science news channels were predicting a large solar flare to strike and cause a large charge of Northern Lights across our atmosphere so strong we would even possibly see it from Ireland….. well oh my were the stats right on Friday night! Never in my life have I witnessed anything so intensely beautiful. It was clear to see these red and green pillars dancing across the sky before my naked eyes 😍
I captured this photo and could not believe how vibrant the reflections where on the surface of Lough Greenan below. It turns out that this was the largest magnetic storm to strike in 22 years and this photo was captured during its maximum intensity which lasted around an hour. I’m delighted to have put in the effort and travelled to Lough Salt that night as i'll never forget this moment 💜

South East Victoria, the Western District Lakes on basaltic grassland landscape covers an area of 329 square kilometers. Some area with fresh water and others are hypersaline.
Salt water lake high in the Bolivian Andes. This lake was above 4,400 M and the next morning was snowed and iced over. The weather changes quickly in this part of the world!
Depending on the weather and time of day these lakes can look quite red to a more bluish color - with the low clouds and evening sunset, the lake was a perfect hue of pink on this day

When my daughter lived in the NL, aka the Netherlands, I tried to visit twice a year, because I loved it there. We often went to special places in cities there and I tried to find small easily packed souvenirs, usually in kringloops (donation stores). The other places you could find cool souvenirs were the town wide yards sales on King’s/Queen’s Day. One of my favorite finds was a small ship with blue&white sails.

Salt Lake Temple on Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. I took this picture early in the morning yesterday for friend who needed it for a brochure. There was construction going on all over the Square, and they were already putting up zillions of Christmas tree lights in the two big Horse chestnut you see in front of the temple (I had to retouch out the lift cranes)!
Background info on the Temple: The Salt Lake Temple is the largest (of more than 120 around the world) and best-known temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is the sixth temple built by the church overall, and the fourth operating temple built since the Mormon exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois. Construction of the Salt Lake Temple began in 1853, and the capstone was laid on April 6, 1892. Dedication of the temple was on April 6, 1893, exactly forty years after the cornerstone was laid. The stone used for the temple is quartz monzonite, which has the appearance of granite. The granite came from Little Cottonwood Canyon, located twenty miles (32 km) southeast of the temple site. Oxen transported the granite initially, but as the Transcontinental Railroad neared completion in 1869 the remaining stones were carried by rail at a much faster rate.
There is a large parking area right off the Bush Highway near Saguaro Lake called "Water Users Recreation Site." Sunrises here on a calm morning like today make for some beautiful scenes.
The two C424m’s that served as as helpers from Hornell are now leading the Delaware & Hudson salt train over the Genesee & Wyoming at Griegsville, New York. NOTE: My slide is labeled as being at Griegsville, but I can’t find anything that resembles this scene on Google maps. Pleae let me know if this is another location.
