American Snout butterfly sipping dissolved minerals left by an evaporating mud puddle.
Although found around here in years past, a very uncommon migrant into the area from the south.
A small salt pool that is quickly evaporating. The reddish color is halophilic bacteria that flourishes in high salt environments. When the water is gone, the bacteria will hibernate within the salt.
The Waxing Gibbous Moon is at 89%.
I used a long exposure here to capture the movement in the water as it moves around this wonderful salt formation.

Today I am happy and sad. I am happy because I am selling my store. We have been running this store for 26 years now so it is hard to say goodbye to this part of my life. I am happy because now we can finally retire and move on with our retirement and I can devote more time to photography and travel a little. I am sad because I will be off of flickr for the next 2 months. I will not be on again until sometime in March, so this is the last picture I will be posting until then. I will miss all of my flickr friends and will miss your beautiful photos. I have so much work to do until then, I have to train the new owners, I have to move into a new house and move all of the stuff I have accumulated over 26 years. A lot of work! I hope you understand, I will miss you but look forward to seeing all of you again in March. God bless you and happy photography see you again in March :) xoxoxo January 1, 2017
The amazing Northton Saltings are a unique formation of little grassy islets situated near the small village of Northton on the Isle of Harris.

This shot was dependent upon several factors outside of my control:
Water up to the shoreline - Salt equipment placed as I wanted - No Wind - No Clouds
The day after it rained, I made a beeline out to this area to see how things have changed. Friday night, I had water and properly positioned equipment!
Sunrise the following day was 5:58 am with no clouds forecasted.
I left home at 4:15 am and made the 20-minute slush through the mud and water to this point – sadly, there was wind for 2 hours and nothing usable.
Sunday morning: Wash; Repeat & Success!
I choose f11 as I had nothing in the foreground, and everything was at a distance – there was no wind and no need for an ND filter – a pretty straightforward shot. This was captured 50 minutes after sunrise. I took several earlier photos, but in the end, this had the color and light I liked most.
The foreground salt reminds me of popcorn with its texture, and the sunset was fantastic!

The altitude of the ponds slowly decreases, so that the water may flow through the myriad branches of the water-supply channels and be introduced slowly through a notch in one sidewall of each pond. The proper maintenance of the adjacent feeder channel, the side walls and the water-entry notch, the pond's bottom surface, the quantity of water, and the removal of accumulated salt deposits requires close cooperation among the community of users.

The famous Hoodoo's, the Salt & Pepper Shakers in Red Canyon as you enter Bryce Canyon in Utah. They look like they could fall over at any moment but they are magnificent and very impressive.
A salt bar is typically a soap made with 50-100% of oil weight in salt.

A view at high tide of the partially submerged trees and barn on Porlock Salt Marsh.
Not a particularly long walk to get to the location and back but a bagful of gear and a half hour of high intensity photography in well over 30°C meant a long cold one was very welcome once we got back to the pub.
Among the most beautiful and distinctive spots in the village of Geraci Siculo, the *Salto dei Ventimiglia* (Ventimiglia’s Leap) deserves special mention.
It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the eastern valley.
Legend has it that in 1337, Francesco I Ventimiglia—the Count of Geraci—was being pursued by the royal troops of Peter II of Aragon. To avoid capture by the enemy, he allegedly spurred his blindfolded horse to leap into the deep ravine below.
Inaugurated in 2014, this structure is made entirely of glass and steel and weighs approximately two tonnes; it projects several meters out into the open air, extending beyond the edge of the cliff face.
The floor is also made of glass, creating the sensation of walking on air for a few steps.
A thrilling, unmissable experience!

Tra i luoghi più belli e caratteristici del borgo di Geraci Siculo, una menzione particolare è da dedicare al Salto dei Ventimiglia.
Un affaccio panoramico sulla vallata orientale da far perdere il fiato.
La leggenda narra che da questo luogo, nel 1337, Francesco I Ventimiglia, Conte di Geraci, inseguito dalle truppe regie di Pietro II d’Aragona, si sarebbe lanciato con il cavallo bendato precipitando nel profondo dirupo sottostante, pur di non farsi catturare dal nemico.
L’opera, inaugurata nel 2014, totalmente realizzata in vetro e acciaio, dal peso complessivo di circa 20 quintali, si protende nel vuoto per alcuni metri staccandosi dal filo della parete.
Il pavimento è anch’esso di vetro, dando così la sensazione di camminare per pochi passi nel vuoto.
Un’imperdibile esperienza “da brividi”!

Iris spuria is a species of the genus Iris, part of the subgenus Limniris and the series Spuriae. It is a rhizomatous perennial plant, from Europe, Asia and Africa. It has purple or lilac flowers, and slender, elongated leaves. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in temperate regions and hybridized for use in the garden.
Due to the wide distribution of the species, it has many different common names, including; 'Spurious Iris', ‘false iris', ‘bastard iris', 'blue iris' (in England), ‘butterfly iris' (also in England), ‘meadow marsh iris', ‘iris steppe', ‘iris des steppes' (in France), ‘Steppen-Schwertlilie' (in Germany), and 'dansk iris' (in Sweden). and 'salt iris' (also in Sweden).
Another is 'seashore iris', but this probably applies to Iris spuria subsp. maritima. Also 'salt iris', and 'salt marsh iris', but this applies to Iris halophila (formerly a subspecies).
Iridaceae is a family of plants in order Asparagales, taking its name from the irises, meaning rainbow, referring to its many colours.
