A view at high tide of the partially submerged trees and barn on Porlock Salt Marsh.
Not a particularly long walk to get to the location and back but a bagful of gear and a half hour of high intensity photography in well over 30°C meant a long cold one was very welcome once we got back to the pub.
Death Valley is best experienced in the morning and during Winter.
At this time of year, you are alone and there are massive weather fronts that travel over the valley. The desert pools with water and the sky's are full of attitude.
This image is an exposure blend from the Salt Flats with its huge octagon shapes. It's a short hike from the roadside and the playground begins.

I just realized that I haven't kept a promise I made a few weeks ago.
And I had promised you the picture of a beautiful historic building that everyone in the city of Lübeck knows, the salt storage. Well, here it is.
It consists of a series of storage buildings built between 1579 (far left) and 1745 (far right). You can see the different architectural styles of the individual parts very well.
Despite the name, not only salt was stored here, but also cloth, grain and wood.
But it all started with salt. This was mainly needed to preserve fish caught in Norway (we're still talking about the 16th century). Pretty impressive.
Jahrundert). Schon ganz schön beeindruckend.

Framed by Douglas fir and maple branches, Salt Creek Falls cascade over a basalt cliff just below the lava plains of the high Cascades. The falls are the third highest in Oregon, dropping 286 feet (87 m) and forming a deep pool (66 feet/ 20 m) at the base. The valley was once broader following the retreat of the Pleistocene glaciers around 14,000 years ago, but subsequent lava flows have filled in some areas creating steep cliffs.
The air this day was thick with smoke from nearby fires- the air quality index (AQI) in Oakridge through which we drove was over 500, putting it well into the “hazardous” category and illiciting “health warning of emergency conditions: everyone is likely to be affected.” Although the air quality was better at the falls (in the 200s), we decided not to do any long hikes here.
For this photo I opted for a relatively high ISO to get a bit of texture in the falls, particularly the individual “waves” of water flowing over the cliff.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine located in the town of Wieliczka in southern Poland, lies within the Kraków metropolitan area. Opened in the 13th century, the mine produced table salt continuously until 2007, as one of the world's oldest salt mines in operation.
Throughout, the royal mine was run by the Żupy krakowskie Salt Mines company.
The Wieliczka salt mine reaches a depth of 327 meters and is over 287 kilometres (178 mi) long.
The rock salt is naturally grey in various shades, resembling unpolished granite rather than the white or crystalline look that many visitors may expect.
In the 13th century, rock salt was discovered in Wieliczka and the first shafts were dug.
The Wieliczka mine is often referred to as "the Underground Salt Cathedral of Poland". In 1978 it was placed on the original UNESCO list of the World Heritage Sites. Even the crystals of the chandeliers are made from rock salt that has been dissolved and reconstituted to achieve a clear, glass-like appearance.

Salt extraction in Maras, Peru. This woman was still at work in the late afternoon. She gave me the chance to help her for a while. It is a hard work done by the local population collectively. Profits are distributed in proportion to the number of extraction wells that are owned. Each well produces on average between 150 and 200 kg of salt per month.
I love the salt of the earth,
I love the spice of life,
I love the salt of love,
I love the salt that is in you.

Salt pans are a common sight in this region, since Tavira is so intertwined with the history of salt. The ancient technology adapted to the landscape of the Ria Formosa turns the salt pans into outdoors chemistry labs. These are an important and humanized environment for several species of birds and microscopic beings. For all these reasons we challenge you to integrate this visit. We guarantee you that you will not look at a crystal of salt the same way.

Just outside the community there is a dry salt pan called Salt Flat Playa or Salt Basin. It straddles the New Mexico-Texas border and is about 150 miles long, and 5 to 15 miles wide making it one of the largest gypsum playas in the United States.
I couldn't help but think about settlers from the past crossing this area and thinking they had spotted water in the valley, only to realize it was all an illusion. The salt glimmers in the sun like water. I can only imagine their reaction when they discovered it was only salt.
