All the roadside sage bushes seem to be flowering right now so Jasper and I ventured out for some photo ops Sunday morning. I like purple so I enjoy it when they bloom. But this was one of those days when Jasper was all happy, happy, happy until I pointed the camera at him, then he wore a serious face.
Last time I saw a sage thrasher, it was three years ago and I didn't get any good picture.

This is a rare bird and not usually found in California. I was thrilled to capture it this morning in a Toyon tree! It's a lifer for me.
Still not many butterflies around. This year I'm even excited if I see a common cabbage white butterfly in the garden. This one was feeding on my woodland sage (Salvia nemorosa). A few moments later it narrowly escaped the Dragon's claws and teeth.

Looking round the garden over the weekend for something interesting to snap up and come across these weathered sage flowers, better still a few of the flowers had some seeds left inside. They've now been planted, hopefully they'll germinate ...
For a while I have been wanting to get a Sage Thrasher singing on sage. I usually see them singing or just standing on fence posts, but today I got the chance I was waiting for, when this happy fellow hoped on a bush and let me move my car close enough for shots. My next goal will be to get one sitting on a prettier bush... :-)
Male sage grouse displaying for the ladies on a bitterly cold and windy morning. Perhaps amorous thoughts helped keep the grouse warm.
The birds have suffered a huge population decline in recent years due to habitat loss and drought.
very similar to the previous, but with it's own mood... (in retrospect, perhaps i should have made them into a diptych)
