Safeway located at 4100 Redwood Rd. in Oakland,CA. This store is still open but its exterior was modified in the late 1980's. The interior was remodeled in the early 1990s and as of late 2011 still lacks a lifestyle remodel. This store is extremely cramped by the standards of new Safeway store but upon my numerous visits Ive noticed this store to be really busy. There is no service bakery, service meat, and only a limited deli at this small store but it doesnt seem to affect customers and the courteous employees. The two Circle S symbols on the facade of the store have been removed but the Circle S on the right hand side of the building is still intact as of December 2011!
Former Safeway located at 310 West Charter Way in Stockton,CA. The store closed in the mid 1980s and only weeks later the building was acquired by CentrOmart. Up until December 31st 2011 this store is the last chance for anyone to see an intact Safeway interior from the 1960's!
The CentrOmart chain which at its peak in the mid 1970's had ten stores in operation throughout the Stockton area. By 2011 the chain was down to a mere six supermarkets with four in Stockton, one in Brentwood, and one in Oakley,CA. In December 2011 it was announced that all but one store (Oakley) would be closed and greatly remodeled for Dollar General which acuired the supermarkets as a way to make their entry into California. The CentrOmart chain had stores that were extremely dated both inside and out most notably still using butcher paper on a weekly basis to advertise their specials! While the stores were dated compared to a Safeway or even Save Mart the chain was did have a rich history (65 years) there was a loyal following which Dollar General will not have to offer. It should be noted that each store had its own unique interior decor which made the chain even more unique.
