"Miniature"
Macro Mondays :-)
These miniatures were a free gift from safeway checkout. I have four of them... wish I got more :-)
Safeway located at 244 North F St. in Lakeview,OR. This store is still open (as of March 2009) and although a very minor remodel occurred inside the store, the "marina" facade has remained intact. The one of a kind Safeway sign is still situated in the parking lot although I noticed a crack in the plastic which could grow over time...
Safeway located at 930 West Harris St. in Eureka,CA. This store which opened on December 7th 1966 was the first in Eureka to have a service bakery and snack-bar on site. The store was managed by John Chostner who overlooked his 83 employees in the 25,000 square foot building. As of February 2009 there have been no plans to close this store which was last remodeled in the early 1990’s. There has not been any expansion whatsoever leaving the store one of the oldest and least altered Safeway locations remaining. For what it’s worth the store does not have a snack-bar anymore nor is it still employing 83 people…
Safeway located at 4100 Redwood Rd. in Oakland,CA. This store is still open but its exterior was modified in the late 1980's. The interior was remodeled in the early 1990s and as of late 2011 still lacks a lifestyle remodel. This store is extremely cramped by the standards of new Safeway store but upon my numerous visits Ive noticed this store to be really busy. There is no service bakery, service meat, and only a limited deli at this small store but it doesnt seem to affect customers and the courteous employees. The two Circle S symbols on the facade of the store have been removed but the Circle S on the right hand side of the building is still intact as of December 2011!
Here is the store on opening day in 1964...
Safeway located at 2520 West Harris St. in Eureka,CA. This store which opened on August 30th 1961 was managed by John Vevoda. There were 36 employees overlooked by Mr. Vevoda who was a nine year veteran with Safeway who previously managed a store located at 5th & I St. (the building has been demolished). The store which was last remodeled during the mid 1980’s is still operating as of February 2009 with few modifications. One thing worth noting is that the CircleS symbols on the exterior of this store appear to be made with glass instead of the common mosaic tiles. There have been hints that the days of this store might be coming to an end within the next two to three years as Safeway purchased the land belonging to Sherwood Florists and Nursery Center.

I took this bouquet shooting up at the lights and then tried to take out the background... I really didn't like the results but it certainly makes for an interesting Kaleidoscope...
Safeway located at 14922 Olympic Dr. in Clearlake,CA. This store opened in the late 1970s after an older marina store located located a little less than a mile away closed. As of May 2009 much of the mid 1990's interior decor remains in place with the exterior still covered with 1980s era signage.
Safeway store located at 525 El Camino Real in Millbrae,CA. This store which opened on April 11th 1962 was one of four stores to feature mosaic scenes put together by muralist John Garth. This store underwent a remodel in the early 1990's which included an updated facade, all the while the mosaic masterpieces were left untouched. Hopefully Safeway will not remove them for any potential expansions or future remodels...
PART OF A SERIES
Photos taken on September 11, 2008 of former SAFEWAY SUPERMARKET converted to PAVILIONS SUPERMARKET in 1988 by VONS, who took over the Southern California and Las Vegas Nevada SAFEWAY division. In 1996, SAFEWAY acquired VONS COMPANIES.
This store closed on September 112,2008. The entire complex is being demolished to make way for a new PAVILIONS. Per different articles, this site is one of SAFEWAY VONS PAVILIONS top stores.
This PAVILIONS SUPERMARKET is located at the corner of Robertson and Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood, Southern California.
Safeway located at 3334 Alhambra Ave. in Martinez,CA. This store retained its 1970's facade until February 2008 when the store was remodeled into the "lifestyle" format. There were originally SAFEWAY letters spelled out individually across the front of the roof and the Circle S symbols were covered by Square S symbols. The SAFEWAY letters were taken down during the lifestyle conversion and the Square S symbols were removed leaving a black circle which looks quite weird and lowbudget move for Safeway.
Safeway located at 950 East Alisal Ave. in Salinas,CA. When I took this photo back in 2003 I was not aware of how soon after the store would close. If I knew I wouldve taken many more photos but for now and forever I only have a few. The store was in really bad shape and the side of town in which it was located had a growing hispanic population. In 2005 after sitting vacant for a short period of time the building was renovated for Mi Pueblo Foods which currently has ten stores in the San Francisco Bay Area including this store and one in Watsonville (slightly out of the "Bay Area"). With the remodel came the removal of the CircleS symbols and a new brightly colored interior. While its sad to see this classic store gone its nice that the area can still be served by a grocery store.

Former Safeway located at 5654 East Kings Canyon Rd. in Fresno,CA. The building is now occupied by a Dollar Tree.

Former Safeway store located at 215 East Lodi Ave. in Lodi,CA. Safeway remained in this building until 1994 and boy I wouldve loved to see the interior at that time. The building became a Grocery Outlet around 1998 and remained a GO until 2004 when it was suddenly closed. After a year of sitting vacant Smart and Final announced their plans to move into the building. The opening occurred in 2006 and upon my visit here on July 14th 2008 seemed to be doing a fair business. About 1/4 of the building is not used and is likely going to be expanded into or more likely rented out to another business. I'm very happy with Smart and Final for keeping the pylon tower upon their entry to the building. It wouldve been hard to remove it but if it was really needed it couldve been done.

Former Safeway store located at 570 Munras Ave. in Monterey,CA. This store building in 1951 was one of the oldest Safeway stores remaining in operation up until its closure (in December 2007). The store even retained a set of manual doors facing the street! Safeway renovated the interior of the store sometime in the 1980's but the general layout remained the same as it had when it opened.
The store closed when Safeway chose not to renew their lease in 2007 and the building sat vacant for a few months thereafter. The City worked with a potential group of tenants who were looking into occupying the vacant building. Trader Joes was best suited for the site and renovations were under way for the store by January 2008. Only weeks before the anticipated opening a car smashed into the building and started ransacking everything in its path. The opening was then pushed back and by early this year was officially opened. Trader Joes seemed to be doing a good business in the building along with a non-related pharmacy occupying about 1/4 of the space.
Former Safeway store located at 3232 East Ventura St. in Fresno,CA. The building is now occupied by a "Ventura Market" which as the name hints sells a lot of hispanic merchandise. The interior walls and lettering have remained exactly as they were when Safeway opened this store in 1960's! New owners took over this store and I had read that the interior was completely gutted... not the case at all.
Upon opening in 1964...
Former Safeway located at 3160 Danville Blvd. in Alamo,CA. The building is currently occupied by a CVS Pharmacy.
Note Safeway opened this store on May 1st 1968 and operated until late 1979 when a larger Safeway was constructed across the street. After Safeway closed the building was sub-divided between a few independently owned businesses, however by the late 1990s about 3/4 of the space was converted into a Longs Drug Store. The Longs chain was acquired by CVS in 2008.
Note the facade of the building remained relatively intact from its days as Safeway until Longs took over the space. Despite the modified facade a small part of the original exterior is visible at the back of the building.

Safeway store located at 1620 Clay St. in Napa,CA. This store had a strange interior and farther proves my belief that the new "lifestyle" remodels are inconsistent. The store has a unique 1980's interior package consisting of the large foam lettering present at many stores receiving a 1980's remodel, but the use of neon at this store is a first. While neon lighting was used at some stores it was not in a cursive font. instead it would be used with the foam letters "FRESH" (neon) "MEATS" (foam). One would think Safeway might expand into the vacant parcel of land bordering this aging store but per the information I have come across it seems like any expansion would be quite unlikely (for now).
