My studio had a great Sunday at Charlene's rakuing! Trish, Dawn, Grace, Ann, Charlene and myself got together to fire pots and talk... about firing pots!! Hey we're potters, that's what we do!
Our Firing box has four circuit interlocks and two people in the loop. Plus a flashy-light and a wake-the-dead ARMED alarm. #safetyfirst!
The timer switch shown in my hand is the LSO's interlock key - she only allows firing circuit continuity for a limited time - she traditionally gives us 10 seconds before she rescinds permission and opens the firing circuit again. After setting the firing window timer, she starts the firing process by pressing her key button. She *must* hold down the spring-loaded button on top of the interlock (under my thumb in the picture) during the whole countdown period or the dead-man opens. When the timer expires, the circuit opens automatically. There is an iron-clad verbal ritual to go with this physical firing process too. Did we mention that "Failure Is Not An Option" is her favorite book?
