Thanks SAFEHOME volunteer Bob Hull for speaking about domestic violence to his fellow employees at Computer Sciences Corporation! As a result of his talk, CSC employees decided to hold a “jeans day” for SAFEHOME. Employees were able to wear jeans to work in exchange for a monetary donation to SAFEHOME. Thanks to Bob and everyone at CSC for their generous support of SAFEHOME!

During the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence Safe Home, Safe Streets Reception, SAFEHOME's Staff Attorney Katie McClaflin was honored with the Juliene Maska Advocate of the Year Award. As Staff Attorney, Katie skillfully navigates the legal system on behalf of victims, providing services to shelter residents and outreach clients in a professional and compassionate manner. Katie provides legal guidance and representation on family law matters, including divorce, child custody and visitation, paternity, name change and post-divorce decrees. She also represents victims petitioning for Protection from Abuse and Protection from Stalking orders at the Johnson County District Court. Katie engages her clients in the decision-making process, and respects their decisions.

Katie is also very active representing SAFEHOME in the community. She has served on the Johnson County Domestic Violence Court Committee and serves as co-Chair of the COMVAC (Community Violence Action Council) Justice Committee. Additionally, Katie helped develop trainings for lawyers and law students to educate them about working with victims of domestic violence. We truly appreciate all of her dedication to helping victims of domestic violence in our community.

Burns and McDonnell is a company doing work that matters. In 2010, the “Mac Culture” buzz phrase was “Safety First, Work Hard and Do Community Service.” Burns & Mac lives out these words in a number of ways at SAFEHOME. Burns & Mac staff member, Hilary Fellows has been a member of the Will Shields Red Flags of Domestic Violence Flag Football Tournament committee for many years. Her Burns and Mac’s Co-Ed division football team has won an impressive seven 1st place and one 2nd place trophies. Joab Ortiz, Senior Public Involvement Specialist for Burns & Mac, served on the Board of Directors for the past 6 years, including the two years as Board President. Each year, the company also donates a large collection of new gift items and gift cards for our Holiday Store. We truly appreciate all their support.
