Michigan Avenue is weird. People fly in for this stretch of road. It's a mall, right? Anyway, this guy was interesting, at least.

Yellow/Blue and Navy/Orange Elite socks and my sissy's BNIB

I meant to post these pictures either Friday or yesterday before Loyola played its Final Four game against Michigan, but I've had a busy couple of days and didn't get to it. But here, you can see that excitement for Loyola's miracle run was running high. A lot of people were at the book store buying stuff, and the scarves had all sold out. There was also a table downtown in the Thompson Center, which houses one of the city's big transit hubs, where people from the school were selling things. I almost bought a scarf, but there are limits to my bandwagoning.

Here's why Loyola's miracle run is a big deal. As a fan of NCAA college basketball, I understand and fully admit that the sport has become an enormous racket that exploits the free labor of a bunch of 18-year-olds to pour loads of money into the pockets of billionaire TV executives, college administrators, and the billionaires running the NCAA itself. (I also think it's important to point out that the majority of the exploited teenagers are black, while all the billionaires are white.) My own University of Kentucky is one of the biggest examples of this exploitation ... though I feel the issue there is at least a little nuanced, and that Kentucky's coaching staff is at least thinking of the kids' long-term financial prospects while they rake in the dough.

The thing about Loyola, though, is that it's a little school seemingly detached from the College Basketball Machine, and the news folk can tell inspiring stories of a plucky bunch of kids from nowhere playing for the joy of the game and coming out on top. Well, at least near the top. This is the kind of story movie people eat up, and the NCAA Machine loves to promote, because it harkens back to a better day. These kids aren't in the game to get the attention of the NBA scouts, the purists say. They're here for the love of the game! They have no hope of an NBA career, which means they'll never make any money off any of this at all! Just as it should be.

Meanwhile, Loyola is charging about $30 for a t-shirt to celebrate the team's success. Some portion of that money will go to feed the NCAA Machine. The kids are prohibited by NCAA rules from ever seeing a dime of it.
