I love carnivals and exhibitions they were always held in September where I grew up and apparently follow a similar path in the Netherlands as several places we visited had their main squares dressed up and covered with tents and children’s rides which is great for the locals but not so much for travel photographers.
Our visit to Amersfoort coincided with one such festival putting into motion my fall back method of trying to capture the heart of a town by utilizing good light with common local life scenes that are not so common at least to my Canadian eyes.
Amersfoort has always been a prosperous place first making its fortune in beer and wool then moving into supplying the Dutch with locally grown tobacco realizing early on that even in bad times people still find money to spend on beer and smokes given man’s constant need for supply of his vices.
Perhaps covering all their bases from vices of the body to supplication of the soul, the town of Amersfoort also became a medieval pilgrimage center based on a few small miracles attributed to a tiny clay statue of Mary to this day celebrated by the naming of the local brew house Brouwerji ‘t Mirakel
I took this on September 20, 2017 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 48mm 1/6s, f/11 ISO 100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz Denoise, Luminar and DXO

May my cry come before you, Lord;
give me understanding according to your word.
May my supplication come before you;
deliver me according to your promise.
May my lips overflow with praise,
for you teach me your decrees.
May my tongue sing of your word,
for all your commands are righteous.

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

The castle owes its fame, in addition to the beauty of the environment, to the many legends it gave rise to. According to one of them, Toblino would have been in the seventeenth century a place of pleasure for Claudia daughter of Ludovico, a native of Fossombrone, with Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo, prince bishop of Trento and last of the Madruzzo. As the supplications to the Pope were in vain to obtain the dissolution of the priestly vows, he would have abandoned himself to a sinful relationship with Claudia. This report was chosen by Benito Mussolini as theme of his historical novel "The lover of the cardinal, Claudia Particella", written in 1910.
A set of relatively recent legends created to stimulate the imagination of the visitors, quotes Carlo Emanuele as conspirator of the death of Claudia and his brother Vincenzo, both tragically drowned in the lake.
Another story tells of the contrasting love of Aliprando di Toblino with Ginevra. One night while Aliprando came home walking on a path, he was killed by Graziadeo di Castel Campo, his rival in love.

Even in our supplication rituals to the unknown creator, we can be held captive by the chains of arrogance, far from the awareness of our helplessness. As soon as you begin to be purified in the infinity of feelings, you will break your chains and see that everything is possible.

On Marriage
You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

The Wood Duck is one of the most stunningly pretty of all waterfowl. Males are iridescent chestnut and green, with ornate patterns on nearly every feather; the elegant females have a distinctive profile and delicate white pattern around the eye. These birds live in wooded swamps, where they nest in holes in trees or in nest boxes put up around lake margins. They are one of the few duck species equipped with strong claws that can grip bark and perch on branches.

In Byzantine art, and in later Eastern Orthodox art generally, the Deësis or Deisis ("prayer”), is a traditional iconic representation of Christ in Majesty or Christ Pantocrator: enthroned, carrying a book, and flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist, and sometimes other saints and angels. Mary and John, and any other figures, are shown facing towards Christ with their hands raised in supplication on behalf of humanity.
In my opinion, what is unusual in this icon is the symbolic presence of all four Evangelists in the image of tetramorphic beings. There are various interpretations as to why this or that apocalyptic creature, as part of the winged tetramorph from the vision of Ezekiel, is considered a symbolic image of each of the four Evangelists.
For example, John the Evangelist is symbolically represented by an eagle, one of the creatures envisioned by Ezekiel (1:10) and in the Book of Revelation (4:7).
Love has drawn her and guided her, has taught her Her ways; the soul has followed Love faithfully, in great toils and countless works, in noble aspirations and violent desires, in great patience and great impatience, in suffering and in happiness, in numerous torments, in quest and supplication, loss and possession, in ascent and in suspense, in pursual and in embrace, in anguish and cares, in distress and in troubles; in immense trust and in doubt, in love and in affliction, she is ready to endure everything. In death or in life, she wishes to devote herself to Love; in her heart she endures endless sufferings and it is for Love alone that she wishes to reach her Fatherland.

The interior of the Betania Monastery is adorned with significantly damaged murals which mark one of the high points of medieval Georgian wall painting. The conch of the altar contains a scene of Supplication of which only the fragments of the figure of an enthroned Christ have survived. The walls of the apses behind the altar are decorated with the frescos of Prophets holding scrolls with Georgian inscriptions. The northern wall is occupied by a cycle of the Passion of the Christ while the southern wall contains the scenes from the Old Testament and the western – those of the Last Judgment.
The north transept of the monastery is notable for the depiction of the Georgian monarchs dating from c. 1207. These are the portraits of George III (r. 1156–1184), his daughter Queen Tamar (r. 1184–1213), and the son of the latter George IV (r. 1213–1223). The Russian prince Grigory Gagarin discovered and cleaned the image of Tamar in 1851, and published his drawings and reports the same year. George IV is shown as a beardless young man in Georgian court robes, but he wears a crown and sword. These attributes suggest that George is depicted as a young king after his co-coronation with his mother, which took place after the death of his father, David Soslan, in 1207. The painting, therefore, helps to determine the approximate date of the Betania church. An important irregularity observed by modern scholars is that none of the secular figures at Betania has a halo, an attribute that was normally used in Georgian imagery to distinguish a royal person from the rest of society.

The Betania Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God is a remarkable piece of architecture of the 'Golden Age' of the Kingdom of Georgia, at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries, and is notable for its wall paintings which include a group portrait of the contemporary Georgian monarchs.
The history of the monastery is poorly recorded in Georgian historical tradition. It was a familial abbey of the House of Orbeli. A series of conflicts and foreign invasions that fill the history of Georgia left the monastery depopulated and half-ruined. It was restored, in the latter half of the 19th century. Betania remained the only operating Georgian monastery, though unofficially, until 1963 when it also became defunct for the next 15 years. In 1978, the energetic Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II succeeded in obtaining permission from the Soviet authorities to reopen a monastery at Betania. In the 1990s, the cloister was refurnished and the local monastic community grew in size and influence.
Architecture
The monastery’s territory seems to have been surrounded by a massive wall, but only dismembered stones scattered in the adjacent forest have survived of it. The extant edifices are a principal domed church of the Nativity of the Mother of God (constructed at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries), a smaller hall church of St. George (1196), and a ruined tower.
The church of the Nativity of the Mother of God is a cross-in-square design with a dome and built of stone, with some external carved decoration in the eastern façade where traditional niches have multifoil or scalloped tops connected to the frame of the middle window. Its high dome, slightly shifted to the east, rests upon the two westerly located freely standing pillars and ledges of the altar. The southern entrance portal is fronted by the gate roofed with a star-shaped vault. Modern scholars have surmised that the church is actually an expanded, domed and decorated version of an earlier basilica probably dating from the 10th century.

In the sepulchral dusk of a world long extinguished, I, Quirlin, a humble ant, bear witness to the desolation that has befallen this forsaken earth. A world unrecognizable, a spectral remnant of its former grandeur, this planet has endured the scourge of 135,235 years since the cataclysmic advent of the first Solar Cyclone. This cataclysm, these calamitous epochs we designate as the Eras of Blazing Wrath, have all but obliterated the race once known as humanity. These five dread ages – The Flaming Inferno, The Burning Wrathfire, The Glowing Destruction, The Heated Chaos, and The Scorched Ash – have eradicated every vestige of electrical circuitry upon this forsaken sphere. The once vital electric grid, the erstwhile lifeblood of civilization, now lingers only in the ephemeral realm of myth.
In the aftermath of these colossal power failures, the cooling systems of all nuclear power plants faltered, precipitating over four hundred catastrophic core meltdowns and an insidious contamination of nuclear radiation. It was amidst this irradiated desolation that we ants began to burgeon, evolving into beings of prodigious stature.
In this transformed and accursed realm, we insects, and particularly we ants, have ascended into beings of titanic proportions. Across countless generations, we have garnered the arcane knowledge preserved within the tomes you termed books, transmitting these esoteric treasures through the annals of time. Our mode of communication has transcended rudimentary methods; we now utilize intricate electrochemical signals, conveyed through the slightest of touches, a language of elegance and precision refined over hundreds of millions of years.
Upon a fateful and foreboding day, as I foraged amidst this wasteland for sustenance, I encountered a solitary human survivor – a trembling monk. The monk, gripped by palpable terror, uttered incoherent supplications to deities long forgotten.
Cautiously, yet impelled by an insatiable hunger, I approached. Despite the altered state of our existence, the primal need for nourishment remained undiminished. As I made contact, his feeble electrochemical signals coursed through me, starkly discordant from those of my kin – chaotic, disordered. I discerned his emotions: raw terror within the monk.
In a futile bid for mercy, the monk raised his hands in desperate supplication, but he was no match for my formidable strength. With a deft maneuver of my mandibles, I dismantled his feeble defenses and commenced my grim repast. His scream, a haunting echo through the desolate expanse, was swiftly stifled. His essence coursed through me, revitalizing my form.
Thus sated, I moved onward. This world, harsh and merciless, now falls under the dominion of us ants. We are the new sovereigns of the earth, and our electrochemical signals shall perpetuate the chronicles of this post-apocalyptic realm. Thus, I traverse the scorched remnants of this ancient world, ever poised to inscribe the next chapter of my saga.

A few hours ago the new Pope Leo XIV concluded his first speech by saying: “Today is the day of the Supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii. Our Mother Mary always wants to walk with us, be close to us, help us with her intercession and her love. So I would like to pray with you. Let us pray together for this new mission, for the whole Church, for peace in the world and let us ask this special grace from Mary, our Mother”.
So I remembered the beautiful sanctuary of Pompeii, which I visited in 2015, of which I had not yet published any photos on Flickr.
Best wishes for a good pontificate to Pope Leo XIV! Best wishes for peace, tolerance, solidarity to the whole world!

Joseph Johnson, a black man who in consequence of his having been employed in the merchant’s service only, was not entitled to the provision of Greenwich. His wounds rendering him incapable of doing further duty on the ocean, and having no claim to relief in any parish, he is obliged to gain a living on shore; and in order to elude the vigilance of the parochial beadles, he first started on Tower-hill, where he amused the idlers by singing George Alexander Stevens’s “Storm.” By degrees he ventured into the public streets, and at length became what is called a “Regular Chaunter.” But novelty, the grand secret of all exhibitions, from the Magic Lantern to the Panorama, induced Black Joe to build a model of the ship Nelson; to which, when placed on his cap, he can, by a bow of thanks, or a supplicating inclination to a drawing room window, give the appearance of sea-motion. Johnson is as frequently to be seen in the rural village as in great cities; and when he takes a journey, the kind-hearted waggoner will often enable him in a few hours to visit the market-places of Staines, Rumford, or St. Albans, where he never fails to gain the farmer’s penny, either by singing “The British Seaman’s Praise,” or Green’s more popular song of “The Wooden Walls of Old England.
This photo was taken shortly after sunrise. Although the Netherlands is mostly a flat country, there are some hills scattered across the landscape which we happily call mountains, or 'bergen' in Dutch. Such hills are in fact push moraines - formed during an ice age by massive advancing glaciers. Pictured in this photo is a vista from one of those hills, around 80m above sea level. The landscape in this EU-protected 'Natura 2000' area is varied, consisting mostly of heather and mixed forest. Sheep often graze on the slopes, ensuring new growth doesn't encroach on the heather.
I have only recently started learning about photography and this weather was quite a challenge for me. It was difficult to keep a cool head when both fog and sunrise come together. On a technical level it proved challenging as well, with many shots affected by noise and a lack of sharpness. I'd welcome any constructive feedback on photographing in misty conditions.
