M77 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Cetus, approximately 47 million light years from Earth. On November 24, 2018 supernova SN2018 IVC was discovered about 50' southeast of the 4th magnitude star Delta Ceti. We began shooting images of the supernova within 24 hours of its discovery, and continued shooting for one week. Our color images were taken more than 5 days after discovery, so we expected the color of the supernova to have shifted from its initial blue to red. The supernova is denoted with black lines in this image.

This image was taken with our galaxy-class imaging array, including 600mm, 400mm and 330mm telescopes. 37-1/2 hours of data in LRGB were shot and processed in Samphran, Thailand by the SC Observatory team: Mike Selby, Andy Chatman, Stefan Schmidt.

Supernova #SN2023ixf capturée au télescope 1000mm de focale.

Elle a nécessité d'être capturée en 2 nuits, le 10 juin et 7 juillet 2023 toujours à cause de la météo. Temps d'exposition totale 6h.

Elle est toujours là !

2 panel stitch of the Vela Supernova Remnant with the goal of creating a 4 panel mosaic; been getting an unbelievable run of clear nights here in Brisbane so I've been busy trying to get as much time on the target as I can. Unfortunately the Supernova sets quite early now so even with the clear nights there's not much time to shoot. So far total integration time's about 13 hours all up with roughly 6.5 hours spent on each panel.

Recently bought this beautifully coloured, smart jacket, and teamed it with this wonderful satin mini skirt, for a walk around the Harbourside. It was a bit cold for this outfit really, but I didn't let that deter me and stopped for a couple of photos before dashing back to the sanctuary of the car.

A two-part mosaic of the Vela Supernova Remnant in Bi-Color Narrowband Hydrogen-alpha (mapped to Red) and Triple-Ionized Oxygen (OIII mapped to Green and Blue)

Vela Supernova Remnant is the remains of a star that exploded about 800 light years away, around 12,000 years ago, creating a vast, intricate cloud of gas and radiation, appearing to us now as roughly the size of 16-full moons, but far too dim to see anything-of without a largish telescope.

This 2-part mosaic was a total of about 45 hours of exposures with a 250mm GSO RC telescope.

With Nautical Twilight taking hold on the horizon, it brings in some light to Gold Creek Pond to help with some reflection. As well, I more or less light painted the foreground with my failed attempt to create a flare/spectrum. Thinking I could obscure the light source enough but in the end, I like it better than all the other attempts and I was losing darkness.

This image shows the distribution of calcium in the supernova remnant SNR 0509-67.5. The data were captured with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument at ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). The overlaid curves outline two concentric shells of calcium that were ejected in two separate detonations when the star died several hundred years ago.

The stately and inclined spiral galaxy NGC 3511 is the subject of this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope Picture of the Week. The galaxy is located 43 million light-years away in the constellation Crater (The Cup). From Hubble’s vantage point in orbit around Earth, NGC 3511 is tilted by about 70 degrees, intermediate between face-on galaxies that display picture-perfect spiral arms and edge-on galaxies that reveal only their dense, flattened discs.

Astronomers are studying NGC 3511 as part of a survey of the star formation cycle in nearby galaxies. For this observing programme, Hubble will record the appearance of 55 local galaxies using five filters that allow in different wavelengths, or colours, of light.

One of these filters allows only a specific wavelength of red light to pass through. Giant clouds of hydrogen gas glow in this red colour when energised by ultraviolet light from hot young stars. As this image shows, NGC 3511 contains many of these bright red gas clouds, some of which are curled around clusters of brilliant blue stars. Hubble will help astronomers catalogue and measure the ages of these stars, which are typically less than a few million years old and several times more massive than the Sun.

[Image Description: A spiral galaxy in space. It is seen tilted at an angle, as a stormy disc filled with clouds of stars and dust. It is coloured more yellowish in the centre, and bluer out to the edge of the disc, where the ends of curved spiral arms break away from the disc. Spots of red light scattered through the galaxy mark where stars are actively forming. The galaxy is on a black background.]

For Macro Monday - Abstract. HMM!

The Cygnus Loop (also known as the Veil Nebula) is a supernova remnant, left over from a massive stellar explosion that occurred between 5,000 to 8,000 years ago. The original supernova would have been bright enough to be seen clearly from Earth with the naked eye. At three degrees across, the Cygnus Loop has the diameter of six full moons.

Now, NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory team has released a 3D model of a simulation describing the interaction of a blast wave from the explosion with an isolated cloud of the interstellar medium (that is, dust and gas in between the stars). You can view this 3D model and others like it at https://www.nasa.gov/missions/chandra/nasas-chandra-releases-new-3d-models-of-cosmic-objects/!

Image description: In the composite image, the remnant resembles a wispy cloud in oranges, blues, purples, and whites, shaped like a backwards letter C. The remnant is set against a backdrop of a million stars.

About 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles, the Trona Pinnacles is one of the most unique landscapes I've ever been to. This image, which shows just a few of the more than 500 pinnacles, highlights just how alien the landscape looks.

Adding to the otherworldly look of this scene is the presence of high cirrus clouds that add a glow and haze to the brighter stars. I also suspect that the red glow towards the horizon is air glow and not clouds as when this was shot the clouds were creeping in from the southwest (this image is centered roughly north).

The pinnacles or tufa spires as they are called are calcium carbonate mineral deposits that formed at the bottom of the ancient and now dried up Searles Lake. These tufa spires formed between 10,000 to 100,000 years ago at the bottom of the lake when calcium rich groundwater interacted with the alkaline rich lake water to produce the spires, some as tall as 140 feet!

Above the tufa spires the fall Northern Hemisphere Milky Way arches overhead. Starting from the right the very famous and recognizable constellation Orion shines brightly with its red areas of nebulosity and very bright stars. The bright orange one on Orion's shoulder is Betelgeuse, a very young and chaotic star that will soon (cosmologically) explode into a bright supernova. It's possible Betelgeuse has already exploded and the light from the explosion has yet to reach Earth. No need to worry as Betelgeuse is far enough away that the effects from the explosion will only look incredible and should have no impact on life here. Next, we move up and to the left the California Nebula (in the constellation Perseus) and Pleiades (in the constellation Taurus) can be found above the arch of the Milky Way. Farther to the left, following the dust lanes of our home galaxy, the Heart and Soul nebulae in the constellation Cassiopeia are seen as the two bright red spots close to each other just past the central peak of the arch. Then farther to the left and down parts of the northern hemisphere Summer Milky Way can be seen in the constellations Cepheus and Cygnus. Fist in Cepheus is the red circular area that contains the Elephant Trunk nebula, then farther to the left in Cygnus is the red North America nebula and Gamma Cygni nebula. Lastly, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) sits high above the Milky Way arch in the top central-left. At around 2.5 million light-years distant it's the most distant object in this field of view.

A final interesting note about the Trona Pinnacles is that they have served as backdrops for some sci-fi movies and television series, such as “Battlestar Galactica,” “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier,” Disney's “Dinosaur,” “The Gate II,” “Lost in Space,” and “Planet of the Apes.”
