W szerszym pojęciu hardcore to przymiotnik, jaki nadaje się artystom i grupom reprezentującym różne gatunki i style, które najlepiej definiują dany nurt. Artyści hardcore najczęściej doprowadzają do ekstremalnej perfekcji podstawowe cechy danego gatunku. Dążą także do zachowania jego czystości. Zwykle też charakteryzują się przywiązaniem do zasad rządzącym gatunkiem (stylem) i nie ulegają chwilowym modom.
