"Get yourself in the midst of an encounter: shoot a picture with people, rather than of people." - Tiffany Jones

-------------------------

I get a completely different reaction from strangers when I'm dressed casually versus being dressed formally in a suit for work. Today, since I was out sick, I happened to be dressed rather casually (corduroys and a sweater, mind you, not Sean John's and Timberlands), and I wandered into a bookstore (location withheld because I'm a classy cat) while out grabbing lunch. The expression you see on this guys' face? That's the look he gave me the whole time I was there, from the minute he looked up from his own book to greet me.

I wound up choosing the two books on the counter, Gordon Parks' Half Past Autumn and a Japanese dictionary. I used my debit card to pay. Now, a customer before me had just used her debit card, and his machine worked fine. But when it was my turn, he had to "make a call first."

That's when I shot him. With my camera. :)

Didn't get out to look for poppies this year, fortunately I have my archives to look through for some

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” – Alice Walker

This quote I need to remind myself of more. Too often I give the powers to others because I want to be nice but I am left with nothing but disrespect.

I always see trees as having strength-of giving shelter through the storms and shade on a hot summers day like a protective umbrella, keeping you safe from the elements.

To my flickr friends who struggle in life, or just have those days when things seem to overwhelming or you feel things are out of control...just hang in there like the strength of an Oak tree-things will turn and they get better-they always do... you just have to push your way through and know tomorrow's another day and you made it through the challenges of today...be strong

Wisdom and Strength

About thirty years ago I visited an antiques market in England and bought a tiny little bronze figure. This elephant I was told is the metaphor for luck, strength and wisdom.

“It’s Ganesha”, the gentleman said. „In India, where I come from, this is a very important god and a son of the powerful Shiva. When Ganesha was a little child Shiva cut his head off by accident and put the head of an elephant on his shoulders. This is why Shivas’ son wears the head of an elephant. And maybe this is why Shiva is called a destroyer.”

He looked at me in a curious way.

Maybe I answered: “Poor son…” or something like that. But I remember exactly what he said: „Only the beaten and defeated become wise.“ He smiled. “Ganesha is my friend. He is pure heart, pure bliss. I adore his company so much. My grandfather was riding an elephant and often I watched him cleaning Ganesh after work in the river near by. They loved each other so deeply. My grandmother was jealous…“

I still keep this figure in honour. Meanwhile I have half a dozen figures in my house and a big Ganesha statue in my garden. But the most important thing is: Now Ganesha lives in my heart. Sometimes my wife is… okay, not really.

Dedicated to an Indian Gentleman I met long ago… and to all antique dealers.

The picture of this elephant I took two years ago when I visited the Borobudur Temple in Java, Indonesia. He was doing his service there. The buddhist monk and the sky and everything is put together with photoshop of course. But I am very happy with the result.

Thank you my friends for all your comments and invites. Even if I cannot post this picture to some groups (Germans are restricted to see groups 18+) and other reasons (time), I do appreciate your comments and invites very much.

I thought for a long time about what to call this particular image. With this week being "Mental Heath Awareness Week" I wanted to pick a positive title that would express how important it is for us to a) never hide our emotions and b) not see sadness or tears as a weakness. When we feel like laughing, we throw our heads back in wild abandon and use our voices to loudly display how amused and happy we are, we sometimes even let tears fall at that moment, without feeling any embarrassment. But when we are down we never let our sadness show, only then are we ashamed of our tears. I guess we have come to a point where we must start asking why it's still taboo to admit to being sad; a fundamental emotion experienced by billions of people the world over since time began... #stoptheshame
