Between the Palmer Archipelago and the Danco Coast—on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula—runs the sprawling waterway of Gerlache Strait. The channel is almost 200 km (124 miles) long. De Gerlache originally named it “Belgica Strait” after the ship he used in his expedition, though later the strait was renamed in honor of de Gerlache himself. I was fortunate to have good weather the day we visited, which allowed me to get some great landscape captures.

On the left you can see Africa (Morocco - Ceuta and Tanger), to the right Spain (Chiclana de la Frontera and Gibraltar). You can see the curvature of the Earth on the Atlantic.

Original span (1927–2007)
The original steel cantilever bridge was designed by Robinson & Steinman and dedicated on May 21, 1927. Prior to this, crossing the Carquinez Strait necessitated the use of ferries. The bridge cost $8 million to build. ... Upon its completion, the span became part of the Lincoln Highway.

I was sorting through older shots last night. (I must admit the situation is becoming desperate... I may have to take a Flickr break, as I am quickly running out of memory chip space.)
This is the Strait of Juan de Fuca near the breakwater in Victoria, on an unsettled day that had cyclical rain squalls followed by sunny breaks.

Beagle Canal is a natural waterway in the south of Tierra del Fuego. Besides the Strait of Magellan, it is the only waterway in the south of the American continent between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.
The eastern section of the channel has formed the border between Argentina and Chile since 1881.
On the northern course of the coast lies Ushuaia, opposite the Chilean military base of Puerto Williams, considered the southernmost city in the world
Bonifacio is located directly on the Mediterranean Sea, separated from Sardinia by the Strait of Bonifacio. It is a city placed on the best and only major harbor of the southern coast and also is a commune covering a somewhat larger region including the offshore Isles Lavezzi, giving it the distinction of being the southernmost commune in Metropolitan France
Vancouver Island is in the distance. This Strait, along with the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound make up the Salish Sea.
A further example of the discarded jettys and moorings that litter the straits between Penang and the mainland.

Taken in the mid afternoon. The seas were still but visibility was poor. The Antarctic Peninsula is the northernmost part of the mainland of Antarctica, located at the base of the Southern Hemisphere. Antarctica is a continent, bigger than Europe, North America or Australia,
