Hardwired for Story
Stories graft themselves into our minds, hearts, and imaginations. They bridge geographical and cultural boundaries. They’re the key to great marketing, great education, and making the NYT Best Seller list. But they’re more than that. At the end of the day, a civilization that forgets how to tell its story crumbles and dies. Scientific research corroborates that our brains process stories like nothing else. That’s because stories tap into our faculties of memory and emotion. We carry stories with us and within us. When it comes to engaging culture, Why trumps What, and story always trumps fact. Dressed in story, ideas are welcome at every hearth, every dinner table, and every bedside. As a vehicle for ideas, story touches us and stays with us; it becomes part of who we are. Emmy-nominated screenwriter Sarah-Jane helps us to think about why insanely great storytelling matters and why it’s the key to our future.

I’m wrapping up this project of self portraits and moving on to a project I’ve been wanting to do since I started photography. I’ll keep incorporating self portraits some as it has been fun. Thanks for following and I’d love to hear which one has been your favourite!

In addition to the many hands on exhibits and workshops, childrens' books of Native American stories and river stories are among the tools used to educate and entertain the very young who visit the center.

After finding out that there are plans to demolish the thriving nature center at Gulf Branch in Arlington this summer due to budget cuts, I created the following group:
www.flickr.com/groups/savegulfbranch/
There is no monetary support being requested. The committee on saving the Nature Center is looking for people to help with community events, including speaking. Photographers can be especially helpful by going out and shooting at the park (off Military Road, most of the photos in the pool are geotagged so you can find it easily) and posting some photos that can be used for the project.
Of course, in the event the nature center does get demolished, these photos will serve as memorializing and preserving the exhibits, etc. that it once housed.
Also, there's information on a petition and other community activities and personal activities that you can take part in.
If you're at all interested in saving the Nature Center, please join the group, and participate.
In my opinion, it's definitely something worth preserving, even during this troubled economy.
