This is an ARM board that I got for free. No idea what I'll do with it, long term, but it packs significantly more punch than an Arduino.
Currently investigating the wild world of toolchains (this is invaluable for OS X). Once I can compile and upload the sample apps, how about getting an RTOS running on it?

STMicroelectronics, uno de los mayores fabricantes de microcontroladores, ha comenzado la producción de los primeros microcontroladores en combinar la arquitectura de 8 bit de elevado rendimiento y las innovaciones de mínimo consumo recientemente anunciadas por la compañía con el objetivo de ahorrar energía en modos activos y “reposo”. La familia STM8L se compone de 26 dispositivos en tres líneas que abarcan un amplio espectro de prestaciones y funciones.
Los nuevos dispositivos ayudan a que los ingenieros incrementen el rendimiento y la capacidad de sus productos finales, al mismo tiempo que responden a los requerimientos del mercado de soluciones “más ecológicas” y aumento de la duración de la batería en productos portátiles y equipos médicos, industriales, de medición ‘e-metering’ y seguridad. Los diseñadores también pueden utilizar estos microcontroladores de 8 bits para cumplir con las pautas marcadas por Energy Star, el Plan 1 W IEA, o la directiva EuP de la Unión Europea.
Las tres líneas STM8L se basan en la plataforma tecnológica de ultra bajo consumo de ST con un proceso de 130 nm optimizado. Esta plataforma se caracteriza por un magnífico rendimiento de CPU con la máxima frecuencia operativa en todo el rango de tensión de alimentación (Vdd), de 1.65 a 3.6 V. Además, al usar un regulador on-chip, el consumo de energía es independiente del Vdd, dotando de flexibilidad añadida y simplificando el diseño.
Otras innovaciones son memoria no volátil embebida de bajo consumo y múltiples modos de gestión de potencia, incluyendo ‘Low-Power Run’ de 5.4 µA, ‘Low-Power Wait’ de 3.3 µA, ‘Active Halt’ de 1 µA con full RTC, y ‘Halt’ de 350nA. Cada dispositivo puede “despertar” desde el modo ‘Halt’ en 4 µs, permitiendo el uso frecuente del modo de menor consumo. Además, entre los periféricos de bajo consumo destacan el reloj en tiempo real (RTC) sub-1 µA y Automatic Wake-Up (AWU). Por lo tanto, esta plataforma logra reducir el consumo de corriente dinámica a 150 µA / MHz.

Los modelos de la segunda línea (STM8L15x) se distinguen por hasta 32 Kbytes de Flash on-chip y hasta 2 Kbytes de SRAM, capacidad de cristal / reloj externo y soporte para Direct Memory Access (DMA). También disponen de periféricos adicionales: temporizador de control de motor, numerosas capacidades analógicas, reloj en tiempo real (RTC) y funciones ADC y DAC. La EEPROM on-chip con función Read While Write (RWW) ahorra la complejidad y los costes de emulación en Flash.
Por último, la tercera línea (STM8L152) destaca por un controlador LCD integrado.

Ordered these little beauties when the exciting Espruino Kickstarter project finished and the whole system (Software, Firmware and Hardware) all went open source so people can follow along during the Beta testing of the project before the final populated boards produced by Seeed are released sometime in December-February once the team are happy with the design and ironed out all the bugs.
I am a big fan of the ARM Cortex-M3 and already own 3 different STM32 based boards that are supported by Espruino (to some extent), I felt like to get the best experience out of this fantastic concept was to have a set of boards printed, stock up on components and build and test each revision of the board until the final production model is released.
Its an exciting prospect of having a Java based ARM-Cortex dev board out there as it pairs two very powerful but easy to use systems together.
I dont doubt that we will see other makers follow suit with this kind of board over the coming year as its a great idea.

If you would like to get involved then please head over to the official Espruino website and sign up for information, download the tools and code that is available. The PCB files are available on their official site as open source but if you want to have an orange one (or more) made to build yourself then give me a shout and I will point you in the direction to be able to order the PCB's from Ragworm UK and give you the Bill of Materials and Component values.
(Please bear in mind that these boards are designed for a pick and place machine and re-flow soldering. They CAN be done at home if you have something you can use to re-flow solder the 64 pin MCU, USB and SD card slot (hotplate, hacked toaster oven, Hotair Re-flow station etc..) and the rest can be done with an SMD tip on your soldering iron (The Antex XS25 with a #57 0.12mm Copper tip is my weapon of choice and a great combo for small SMD work) and you will also need some magnification (a 4x magnifing unit is ideal but you could just get away with a 2x if your sight is 20/20).
Its doable but is not recommended unless you are very competent with SMD soldering or know someone with a P&P machine and re-flow gear.
